The world’s leading countertenor, David Daniels, sings the title role opposite Natalie Dessay as an irresistibly exotic Cleopatra. Baroque

2:00-4:00 pm – Paul Sawyier Library, A Celebration of Poetry, In recognition of April as National Poetry Month, PSPL will present an afternoon of poetry readings on Sunday, April 28th, beginning at 2:00pm, featuring Kentucky poets Steven R. Cope and Frederick Smock. A brief “open mic” session will precede the featured readings, and local poets wishing to read during this session should arrive at least fifteen minutes early to sign up.
Steven Cope, a Menifee County native who now lives in Winchester, will read from his new volume of Selected Poems featuring verse from his six previous poetry collections published over the past decade. Cope’s poetry is deeply rooted in nature, especially his beloved Eastern Kentucky hills, but is equally informed by his extensive knowledge of literature. The tension between these two poles of his experience makes for powerful and evocative verse. Frederick Smock is a Louisville native, where he is currently Associate Professor of English at Bellarmine University. The author of five previous collections of poetry in addition to numerous other books he has written or edited, he will read primarily from his latest collection of poetry, The Bounteous World. While some of the poems in this volume were inspired by his discovery of the Norwegian poet Olav Hauge, Smock’s view encompasses a broad range of everyday matters, rendered with miniaturist detail in his refined, elegant lines.
Both of the featured books in this reading were published by Frankfort-based Broadstone Books, and the readers will be introduced by publisher Larry W. Moore. These books and others by the two poets will be available for sale and signing following the readings.
This free event will take place in the Library Community Room. For more information, contact Diane Dehoney at 352-2665×108 or diane@pspl.org. 319 Wapping St. Frankfort
