On Saturday, June 29, 2013, Cool Comfort Shoes hosted a mini seminar on Yamuna Body Rolling and Foot Fitness Massage by Marcie Wingfield Shanks, whom you may know from Crossroads Ford Lincoln on Versailles Road, but who is also a very busy wife, mother, and budding entrepreneur with two new start-up businesses, including this one.  Marcie now is a certified Dimensions Wellness instructor.  I asked her to write this article to explain her journey from living with pain to getting involved with this type of massage therapy.  The runners and other in attendance at her seminar on Saturday saw improvement in balance and pain relief.  She focuses on more one-on-one or smaller group sessions, but even the individuals in this larger group saw some improvement.  Enjoy this read on her journey…

From Pain to Passion

By Marcie Wingfield Shanks

After experiencing 18 years of chronic pain, multiple diagnosis, medical treatments, multiple surgeries, inability to lose weight, and many, many, medical practitioners I finally found the answers I was looking for to what I believe to be the source of my pain and illnesses – food.  Let’s get back to food in a minute.  First I want you to understand that no medical practitioner ever told me to look at food, and that none of my previous and multiple diagnosis pointed to food, yet I knew my body was inflamed with an autoimmune disease and there had to be a reason.  Inflammation doesn’t magically appear in your body for no reason; it’s a response, a reaction to something deeper.  A signal that something is wrong and you should address it.

Over the years I had tested many dietary theories that were supposed to help this pain or that pain.  Unfortunately they were all fad type theories and none of them addressed my individual genetic make-up.  There were foods that my body didn’t like, but I never knew how to identify and eliminate them until I was finally in so much pain I had to do something drastic if I was going to be able to function every day.

So I did something drastic.  A friend I knew had been to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and had participated in their Health Coaching Certification where they teach over 100 dietary theories.  She had been posting on Facebook about one of the theories that was supposed to help with inflammation, and so I thought “What do I have to lose?”  I was spending most of my days in bed in pain then, so why not? This nutritional theory was finally something different.  I got to see specifically how my body reacted to foods I had eliminated to reduce inflammation when they were reintroduced to my diet.  Things I would have never in a million years guessed would bother me did, and that was the spark of my passion to help others that have experienced long-term pain, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and inability to lose weight.

I knew I was on the beginning of a long journey to recovery, but it felt great to get started!  Unfortunately my body was a disaster and wasn’t moving along at quite the “Type A” pace I was used to running.  So I had to be patient.  The years of long-term pain, as well as multiple surgeries had caused many of my muscles to be dysfunctional and filled with trigger points, so I was regularly seeing a physical therapist.  She recommended I check out the work of a woman called Yamuna Zake.  Yamuna developed a practice called Yamuna Body Rolling and Foot Fitness, both work in tandem as a body sustainability practice.  In Yamuna Body Rolling you stimulate the bone at the origin of the muscle and work from the origin to the insertion working out trigger points, releasing tension from the muscle, aligning the bones, and building strength.  In Yamuna’s foot fitness practice you learn that everything translates from the feet and many of us never learned to walk properly using the designed structure of the feet.   I immediately took to the work and decided if I was going to get well faster I should just go and take her courses.

I embarked on a three-week journey to New York City and studied everything I could learn about Yamuna’s work so that I could have the fastest recovery ever!  It was there that the rest of my dream was born to help others not only recover from their pain and illnesses, but also to teach people how to keep their bodies healthy and from becoming dysfunctional in the first place.

I was feeling better than I had all year, but I was still having some pain.  I knew I had only scratched the surface to learning about all the unique things going on in my body in regard to food and I wanted to know more, so I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition’s Health Coaching program so I could learn the dietary theories myself.  I am now halfway through that program and am beginning to see clients!

My dream is to reach people with experiences like mine where they feel like they’ve never really gotten all the answers to what is plaguing their bodies.  I want to be a detective that coaches and supports my clients to find their healthiest selves.  The great thing about what the Institute for Integrative Nutrition teaches is there is no one size fits all drug, diet, or path.  It is all customized to your unique health history, experiences, and goals. I offer complimentary health history evaluations to determine if my services are a good fit for your health goals.  If we are a good match then I will share my passion with you and do everything I can to help you reach your healthiest self!  One conversation about your health history could change your whole life; working with a health coach is very empowering because you get to tell your story and have someone listen to ALL the details.  I would love to help you become your healthiest self!
