From the desk of the Franklin County Sheriff Department:
At 5:43pm deputies were dispatched to I-64 EB at the 58mm in reference to an injury single vehicle collision. Caller stated to dispatch that the driver was trapped in vehicle and vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Upon arrival deputies found the man to have been pulled from the vehicle by passer bys that stopped to help. It was determined that the driver was Raymond Burdett o…f Ontario Canada. Mr. Burdett stated he was operating his rental 2013 Mazda SUV when he dropped off of the inside left median shoulder and steered right to get his vehicle back onto the roadway. While trying to correct his vehicles path he over steered and lost control causing him to travel onto the right side shoulder and down into the rock cut ditch line. When speaking with Mr. Burdett he could not recall much about what occurred after hitting the ditch line. Mr. Burdett’s vehicle was reported by witnesses to have flipped end over end a total of 3 times before coming to rest on the roof and bursting into flames.
Witnesses further stated that 3 uniformed military soldiers who were traveling west bound stopped, crossed the cable barrier, and entered the vehicle in an attempt to free Mr. Burdett. It was further determined that a 4th man also entered the vehicle and cut the seat belt to free Mr. Burdett before the 4 men dragged Mr. Burdett to safety. The 4th man happened to be a soldier as well just in plain close.
Mr. Burdett was taken by ambulance to Frankfort Regional Medical Center where he was threated before being flown to UK. Franklin County Fire and Frankfort EMS also responded to this crash. This crash is being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
