Today was the day that I met with my trainer, Terry Wilson, at Fit-Time for Women. I have to tell you, I lost sleep over this initial meeting! I really didn’t know what to expect. I’ve been to the gym before. I’ve worked out by myself. I’ve worked out with a girl friend. I’ve never worked out with a trainer. And, that will actually start tomorrow. But for today, I had an assessment done, and we discussed goals. Not long term goals. But the immediate, short term ones.
I’ve been down this road before…the road to lose weight and get healthy. I started using the myfitnesspal app on my phone to chart my progress, to log in my food intake and to log my activity. I’ve used this app before with some success as it “keeps you honest” with yourself. Several of the things that Terry wanted me to do, the app already helps me do. Monitor and log food intake? Check! I don’t drink enough water. So, my trainer encouraged me to increase my daily water intake. This app helps me monitor that process as well. The hardest thing that I will find is cutting back on the amount of diet drinks (especially) I consume. Diet Coke is my caffeine of choice. Much like someone can consume a pot of coffee in the morning, I can go through a 2-liter bottle just sitting at the computer blogging on my website or editing event photos! Apparently, that’s bad. And, as much as I love Diet Coke, I must cut WAY back! Done. All is not lost, however. Although I’m not a huge fan of plain water, I really enjoy drinking water with a squirt of lemon juice. I also take my iced tea unsweet with a couple of lemon slices, no sweetener at all. I find it very refreshing and not so “boring” as plain water. There’s also a variety of water flavorings available for purchase if I decide to deviate.
When setting the weekly workout goal, Terry suggested that I work out 3 times a week to start. One of those times with her. I like to work out odd days like Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But we scheduled our workouts for Tuesdays. So, four days it is! Ultimately, I’d like to lose just a couple pounds a week. I know I didn’t put the weight on overnight. So, I know it’s not going to drop off overnight. Did you know, back in the day, I used to wear size 5-7 clothes? For those of you that personally know me, you know that I’m 5’10” tall. And me at a size 5-7 makes me look sickly! I really don’t want to be that small again. I just want to be realistically healthy so I can continue to do what I love to do and be with those most important to me.
Terry gave me her full attention today. After assessing me and setting goals, she reintroduced me to my favorite friend, the treadmill. Many of you know me and that know that I work hard and I can cover a lot of ground during an event. I like the treadmill and the elliptical machines, especially, because of my long stride. She showed me how to keep it from getting boring, very important to my success.
One thing that I decided to do was treat every workout as a meeting and I wrote it in my calendar book as such until I get my routine down. I also set alarms until my body adjusts.
On a very personal note, I’d like to thank everyone that has been encouraging me since I revealed this journey in this very public way last week. The Frankfort community is the BEST! I’ve received encouragement from people who are much more active than I, including people who are from other area gyms. I’ve received a couple of recipes. But more are always welcome! I’m going to start collecting and posting them as a separate page for all to enjoy. So please, keep them coming!!! It just goes to show you though, no matter where you work out, or how you work out, it just matters that you work out! Thank you my friends!!! Your support means the world to me.
The hardest part about today was the assessment. Coming face to face with how far I’ve let myself slide over the last five years…since my last assessment at Fit-Time. But that’s why I’m there!
