Days of Knights – A Medieval Experience was conceived as a publicity tool for an archery range and quickly grew to something far more than that. In 2011, the City of Frankfort’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites was putting the finishing touches on its new archery range at… Cove Spring Archery Park. The Department’s curator of historic sites suggested that a medieval themed archery demonstration event might help bring attention to the new facility, taking advantage of the current popularity of numerous movies and television shows with medieval themes. The concept of the event grew rapidly as more and more living history components were added to the basic idea.

With generous support from the Frankfort Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites and the Frankfort/ Franklin County Tourism and Convention Commission, Days of Knights became an educational and entertaining medieval living history event at which historical accuracy is emphasized.

The first Days of Knights event was held at Frankfort’s Cove Spring Archery Park in October, 2012. The three-day event attracted about a hundred costumed participants and some 5000 spectators, which delighted local parks and tourism staff members. Days of Knights had been planned as a one-off event, but its popularity with enthusiastic participants soon led to planning for a repeated event. Under the leadership of Daniel Peterson, the 2013 Days of Knights weekend was held at Oak Grove, Kentucky – near Fort Campbell – in October of that year. The turnout of fascinated spectators was even greater than that in Frankfort the year before. In 2014, Days of Knights returns to Frankfort. Plans now call for the event to be in Frankfort every other year with another locale – presumably Oak Grove – hosting it in the alternate years.

This is a FREE and FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT.

Longshots The Lounge

LONGSHOTS COCKTAIL LOUNGE; FRANKFORT’S COOLEST NIGHT SPOT FOR HOT ENTERTAINMENT

Presents The Sammy Coulter Show

Jockey JAMES LONG of Kentucky horse racing fame, had a dream after retiring from the track: to provide a relaxing, comfortable place where friends and patrons could enjoy an adult beverage & listen to the area’s great talent. He and his wife realized that dream earlier this year when they opened Longshots Cocktail Lounge.

Continuing with their Friday Jazz Series, on August 29, from 8 to 11pm, Longshots will present The Sammy Coulter Show, starring Sammy Coulter. Coulter, a Louisville native who now calls Frankfort home, performs a mix of old standards, jazz/rock, blues & adult contemporary & will knock your socks off with his powerhouse, blue eyed soul vocals. If you haven’t caught one of Sammy’s shows recently you owe it to yourself to discover what others already know– it’s showtime from the first song to the last.

Something many don’t know is that Sammy recently attracted the ear of WORLD FAMOUS producer, Peter Sullivan (the one who introduced Tom Jones to the world). Sullivan & Coulter are now working together in artist development.

You can catch Sammy’s amazing vocals & smooth sax style at Longshots on the 29th and again on September 12 at 765 Holmes Street, Frankfort KY 40601. Find The Sammy Coulter Show online at www.sammycoulter.com

This is a 21 & over show and there will be a small cover at the door. Be sure to check out all the events and specials Longshots has to offer. For more information contact Longshots at (502) 320-2415 and follow them on FaceBook at www.facebook.com/Longshotscocktaillounge

A Gathering of Authors, Gathering of Authors, Paul Sawyier Public Library

The Paul Sawyier Public Library played host to the 7th Annual Gathering of Authors on Saturday.  The Gathering is a celebration of the rich tradition of literature in Kentucky. This event featured gifted writers who play an integral role in our service to readers throughout Frankfort and the Commonwealth.

The free event welcomed readers to come and meet some of the most talented writers from across the Bluegrass.  They were able to purchase books and get the authors to sign their works as well as carry on a dialogue with attendees about their craft. The Gathering is always an excellent opportunity to meet some of your favorite authors in a casual, comfortable atmosphere.

BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY (August 21, 2014) –The results from the 2014 International Wine & Spirits Competition have been announced and three of Barton 1792 Distillery’s bourbons have won medals.

Kentucky Tavern, Zackariah Harris and 1792 Ridgemont Reserve bourbons each won silver medals in this year’s competition.

“We are pleased that each of the bourbons we entered received such a consistent evaluation by the judges,” Ken Pierce, director of distillation and quality assurance, said. “We are excited and honored by these wins.”

The International Wine and Spirit Competition was founded in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs.

All entries are first blind tasted in groups divided by variety, region and vintage as necessary, by professional expert judges (by glass, not bottle) and then the top products are sent for detailed (chemical and microbiological) analysis. This analysis is crucial as in some instances the results of this analysis may lead to marks being deducted or even outright rejection.
