"The Voice", Craig Wayne Boyd, NBC

NBCs The Voice Website Banner

Several months back, Capital Living introduced you to Craig Wayne Boyd during another Frankfort resident’s Second Wind Dream (http://wp.me/p2ONcT-arq).  Betty Bridges wanted to sing with a big country music star.  Back on July 26th, 2014, Miss Betty had no idea what was about to unfold just a couple short months later!

The Texas native had been trying to make his dream become a reality in Nashville for several years now.  But beyond the big heart that he displayed towards the Frankfort elderly woman, his equally talented voice and natural stage presence was not noticed.  This is until Craig Wayne Boyd auditioned for the wildly popular NBC TV Show, The Voice.  Craig was snatched up by Blake Shelton in the Blind Auditions part of the show, which aired back in late September.  In the Battle Rounds, he was stolen by Gwen Stephani.  In the Knockouts, Blake stole him back.  Last week, when there were twelve contestants remaining in the competition, the voting was put into American public’s hands and CWB made it to the last ten contestants.  Tonight, airing on NBC at 8 pm, Craig Wayne Boyd continues his aspiration to make a name for himself in the country music market.

One need only listen his music to appreciate his talent and range.  Take a listen to his YouTube videos and judge for yourself.  If you agree that he deserves to continue on in The Voice, then share, repost, and VOTE!!!  Having met Mr. Boyd, he’s the genuine article.

Check out his videos from his performance in July below:

8th Graders from Across the County Realize the Hardships of “Life”

19 Wednesday Nov 2014

Chamber, Chamber Event, Chamber of Commerce, Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce, Frankfort Chamber, Frankfort Chamber of Commerce, Frankfort Convention Center, Reality Store

Once a year, the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce partners with public and private schools across Franklin County and invites their respective 8th graders to a dose of “reality” at the Frankfort Convention Center.  On Wednesday, November 19th, dozens of volunteers and business owners from the community hosted and mentored these students as they placed themselves in their “future selves” shoes, as a 25 year old, single, working and possibly a parent, on a strict budget.  Their jobs were based on their GPA and attendance.  They were assigned a career and dependents randomly.

Once they determine their monthly income, they must proceed to pay taxes, open up a bank account, find suitable housing and transportation, pay bills, and other random things that “just happen” in real life.  They soon realize that the $2,000 a month from their “great job” doesn’t go very far when having to pay for clothes and childcare too!

The program is designed to teach the 8th graders the value of budgeting “wants” versus “needs”.  Causing them to ask themselves questions like, “should I really pay $100 to go out to eat or should I pay that FPB bill?”  Or, “should I take public transportation versus buying that sports car?”  All decisions that we, as adults, face everyday.  The point of presenting this program to 8th graders is to get them to realize that it’s not too late to develop better study habits and push themselves to have better attendance.  Because in 9th grade, the GPA starts counting towards college.  By then it’s too late.

If you have an 8th grader in Franklin County, ask them about what they learned this year from their Reality Store experience.  Open up that dialogue with them about what choices they made and what choices you would have made based on your own experiences.

This is an all volunteer program.  If you’d like to volunteer to help with next year’s Reality Store, contact Carmen Inman at the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce at (502)223-8261.

Washington, D.C. (November 19, 2014) TheNational Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, in cooperation with the Community Arts Center in Danville, KY,  announced that Traci Thompson and  Warehouse Afterschool Program have been chosen to design and create ornaments to be included in the 2014 Pathway of Peace in President’s Park in Washington, D.C. Traci Thompson and Warehouse After School Program join local artists and youth from each U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia.

The Pathway of Peace is one of the highlights of the National Christmas Tree Lighting, a national event presented by the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service.

Kentucky’s ornaments were made by students of the Warehouse Afterschool Program which serves children and youth who do not speak English as their first language or who do not regularly hear English spoken in the home.

The artist, Traci Thompson, is a native of Versailles, KY who brought her talents back to the Bluegrass State after studying art in Colorado and abroad.

The project was coordinated by the Community Arts Center in Danville, KY where Ms. Thompson teaches painting classes and the Warehouse Afterschool Program students attend regular programming.

“The iconic image of a cardinal, KY’s state bird, in the snow was the initial inspiration”, says Thompson.  “The students enjoyed developing a unique personality for each bird as the project progressed.  They were thrilled that their ornaments were going to be ‘sent to the President’ and seen by so many people in Washington, D.C.”

The cardinals are papier-mâche, painted red and decorated with feathers.  The birds sit in a bed of greenery and snow made from cotton balls inside clear globes.

As part of Kentucky’s important and growing immigrant population, the children and their families were honored to represent Kentucky and participate in a national event.

Four weeks of holiday events in President’s Park will kick off with the 2014 National Christmas Tree Lighting, scheduled forDecember 4, 2014.

As one of America’s oldest holiday traditions, the National Christmas Tree Lighting began on Christmas Eve in 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge lit a Christmas tree in front of 3,000 spectators on the Ellipse in President’s Park.  Since 1923, each succeeding President has carried on the tradition of what now has become a month-long event presented by the National Park Foundation and National Park Service.  In addition to the Pathway of Peace, President’s Park hosts a variety of family-oriented holiday attractions, including nightly holiday performances, and model train display.

A duplicate tree featuring Kentucky’s ornaments is on display at the Community Arts Center in Danville, KY.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Releases Fifteenth Round of Single Oak Project Bourbon

Second to last release in the series looks at the top and the bottom of the tree cut while Master Distiller explains differences

FRANKFORT, FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY (Nov. 18, 2014) – Buffalo Trace Distillery is nearing the end of its Single Oak Project, with just one more bourbon release to go after this, in what will be a four year study of seven different variables and how they affect taste.

This release features bourbons which were all aged in barrels with the same entry proof (105), same stave seasoning, aged in the same warehouse (concrete floor), and same char level (number three). All other variables, recipe (wheat or rye), grain size, and tree cut (top or bottom of the tree) vary.

“There are many variables to consider in this project but one of the most interesting to learn more about has been tree cut,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller. “There are four direct components that are related to wood that contribute to our bourbon flavor; hemicellulose, lignin, tannins, and the char layer. There are two major considerations when it comes to tree composition and location, and those are lignins and tannins. The top half of the tree tends to have more lignin, which contributes to the formulation of vanilla and vanilla flavor. The bottom half of the tree tends to have more tannins, which contributes to the formation of ellagic acids and tannic flavor. Tannic flavor leaves your mouth dry and delivers complexity or richness in texture.”

If past online votes are any indication, fans are all over the board when it comes to their favorite. Barrel # 82 retains its lead, but the other barrels in the top spots vary in char level, tree location, recipe and char level. The only thing it seems fans can agree upon at this time is the entry proof (105) and warehouse (rick warehouse.)

But it’s not too late to get in on the act and start reviewing, as there are no clear cut winners yet, and another release after this one to go before this project ends in the summer of 2015.  More than 4,300 reviews have been given so far onwww.singleoakproject.com.

The Single Oak Project is part of an intensive research project Buffalo Trace Distillery started conducting in 1999 by hand picking 96 trees with different wood grains and then dividing them into a top and bottom piece, yielding 192 unique sections. From there, staves were created from each section and were air dried for either 6 months or 12 months. After all the staves were air dried, a single barrel was created from each tree section, resulting in 192 total barrels. These barrels were given either a number three or a number four char and then filled with either wheat or rye recipe bourbon.

To further the variety of experiments, the barrels were filled at two different proofs, 105 and 125 proof.  And if this wasn’t enough, two completely different warehouses were used, one with wooden floors and one with concrete floors.  In total, seven different variables were employed in Buffalo Trace’s ultimate experiment.

For eight years the Distillery continued with its tracking process, creating intricate databases and coming up with a potential of 1,396 tasting combinations from these 192 barrels!

The Single Oak Project Bourbon is being released in a series every three months from 2011 through 2015 until all of the 192 barrels have been released. The first release hit select stores in 2011.  This fifteenth release will reach stores in December. Like all the other releases, the quantities are very limited. Every case will contain 12 bottles, each from a different barrel. The fifteenth release is made up of barrel numbers 21, 22, 53, 54, 85, 86, 117, 118, 149, 150, 181, and 182. All releases will be packaged in a 375ml bottle. Suggested retail pricing per bottle is $46.35.

At the conclusion of the Single Oak Project, the Distillery plans to take the top rated Single Oak Project Bourbon and make more just like it, under the Single Oak name.

Now just called ” The Cornerstone”, formerly Cornerstone Art and Events Gallery and the Cornerstone Cafe’, is the home to two new businesses that are Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce members.  Periwinkle Interiors and Simply Garden now occupy the space simply known as “The Cornerstone”.  The building itself, located on the corner of East Broadway and High Streets, has a rich history as it used to be the old negro train station back in the day.  Today, it’s the new home to two growing businesses.  The Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce and several of it’s members helped celebrate this new beginning for an old building with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, November 18th.

Periwinkle Interiors, LLC is owned by Terri Bennett, who also is in the real estate industry with Century 21 Commonwealth here in Frankfort.  Which we suspect means that she can sell you your next home and decorate it for you too!  All kidding aside, Periwinkle Interiors and Simply Garden tend to compliment each other within this space.  Simply Garden, which is owned by Teresa Abelle and Kim Hicks, is a retail store with gift ideas for your home and garden.  They currently offer centerpiece and terrarium workshops, with workshops scheduled December 13th, January 17th and one in February.  To find out more about these new Chamber members and downtown businesses, contact them at (502)545-8104, stop by and see them at 100 East Broadway, find them on Facebook, or email them at Simplygardenky@gmail.com.  We guarantee that there is something for everyone in this very beautiful space!
