Many of you have read my previous articles about getting healthy that started this past summer.  I’m sure many of you have noticed that those series of articles have, like my constant struggle with getting healthier, have been derailed.  Oh sure!  I can come up with excuses like, “I was busy with work”. Or how about this? “I bought a house”. Or even, “I am a single mom with responsibilities to my child”.  Or even, “my trainer was out for several weeks with surgery”.  They ALL apply to me!  And most may even apply to you as well.

It doesn’t take a new year to learn to be nice to yourself.  To exercise on regular basis.  To eat properly.  To give yourself time to sleep and your body to recover.  It takes a commitment to yourself any time of the year.  Once that commitment is made, sticking to that commitment year round to form new habits.

Still, most people, myself included, look back on year and ask themselves, “how can I make this year better? What can I do this year to improve myself over last year?”  I’m always looking to improve.  I like using January and February, typically slower times of the year for me to make changes to my businesses.  I use the slower times to look for ways to improve my websites – both Capital Living and Digital Expressions Photography.  I welcome new ideas for both (hint! hint!)  I look for new ways to get involved in the Frankfort community.  Overall, I just strive to be a better ME!  Their not a “New Year’s resolutions”, per say.  They are subtle changes on improving oneself.

I’ve recently gotten little “nudges” in the form of texts from a certain lady that I adore.  I value her opinion above so many others in this community.  She has become another “mom” to me.  And, as that parental figure, it is her right, almost a duty, to nudge me when I falter and get out and out lazy on my quest of being a better ME!

The New Year is another good “nudge”, especially for us ladies!  We put our children, our significant others, our jobs and careers, and yes, even our homes, ahead of taking care of ourselves.  There is no limit to the number of excuses we can come up with!  But, if we don’t take care of ourselves, we won’t be here to take care of those other things.

I’ll be taking care of ME again!  I’m headed back to Fit-Time for Women (maybe even taking some classes), walking, bike riding, making time for proper sleep, and watching what I eat.  Who’s WITH ME?!  This will be a HAPPY 2015!!!

New-Years-Eve-2015-2

Many of us look for safe places to celebrate ringing in the new year with friends.  One of the biggest bashes that takes place in Frankfort is at the Capital Plaza Hotel.  This event attracts hundreds each year and features a live band in one ballroom, a DJ in another, live music in the lounge and Bluegrass music everywhere else! There’s plenty of food and adult beverages in the main ballroom.  The live entertainment this year will be Onyx, a local band playing classic rock favorites, while DJ Charles “Junie” Redden will be rocking it in the Caucus Room.  If you’re looking for admission into these two venues, then you’ll be shelling out $49 per person or $89 per couple.  But this does include party favors and champagne toast at midnight, hor d’oueves and a cash bar.  Many other bars and lounges around Frankfort will have great entertainment slated this night.  Check with your favorite watering hole to see what they have planned for that night.

In nearby Owenton, Elk Creek Vineyards is offering a dining celebration on New Year’s Eve featuring live music by Velvet Soul, a buffet style dinner, Hors D’ouevres and party favors.  The cost is $69.99 per person.  For more information or to book this event, click HERE.

If you plan on traveling to nearby Lexington, then you may want to stop by Redmon’s Fine Music & Spirits, located at 269 West Main Street to hear regional favorite Borrowed Blue, performing some great country music and some popular covers too.  Cover is only $5 with drink specials all evening.

If you have an event for New Year’s eve that you would like Capital Living to add, please email it to CapitalLivingKY@gmail.com.

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY BRINGING BACK

“LEGENDARY CRAFTSMAN SERIES” IN JANUARY

Series of Three Events Will Focus on Tales and Tastings

From Some of the Famous Men of Buffalo Trace Distillery

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Dec. 17, 2014) Buffalo Trace Distillery is bringing back its Legendary Craftsman series for 2015, which will focus on three prominent figures in Buffalo Trace Distillery’s history, each of which helped shape this National Historic Landmark into a distillery known around the world for its whiskies as well as its southern hospitality.

The 2015 Series will consist of:

January 16, 2015 – George T. Stagg dinner – Due to popular demand, we’ve brought this event back for 2015.  Born in 1835, George T. Stagg built the most dominant American distillery of the 19th century, which is now known as Buffalo Trace. Stagg’s salesmanship and financial acumen helped build the Distillery into one of the world’s leading bourbon producers. Join us as we learn more about the man whose brands, George T. Stagg and Stagg Jr., evoke pride and envy amongst those who enjoy them.  The evening will consist of dinner plus a sampling of some of George T. Stagg’s namesake bourbons.

January 23, 2015 – William Larue Weller dinner – W.L. Weller is credited with being the first distiller to produce bourbon using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill. Weller’s original “wheated bourbons” became extremely popular, with a softer, smoother taste. There are just a handful of wheated bourbons on the market today. Join us as we hear more about Weller’s life and are led through a dinner and tasting of some of the Weller collection of bourbons produced at Buffalo Trace.

January 30, 2015 – Rye Cocktail Party – Join us as we put a different twist on the series by throwing a rye cocktail party. Come experience rye cocktails paired with special courses by regional chefs and bartenders. Learn about the rye resurgence from an industry expert, and taste some of Buffalo Trace’s finest rye whiskies, including Sazerac 18 year old and Thomas H. Handy. Learn who Thomas H. Handy was, and taste his famous creation, the Sazerac Cocktail.

Tickets for the Legendary Craftsman Series are now on sale.  Ticket prices are $60 each or $150 per person for all three events.  All of the events start at 6 p.m. with an optional tour, followed by the tasting/dinner at 7 p.m.  The evenings will conclude about 9 p.m. Attendees must be 21 years or older to attend. The dress code is dressy casual. Reservations may be made at 502-696-5930 or events@buffalotrace.com.

New Frankfort High Alumni Tradition Gathering Momentum

FHS Alumni, Frankfort Country Club, Frankfort High, Frankfort High School

It wasn’t that long ago that Ben Smith and his wife, Martha, returned to the commonwealth and settled in Georgetown.  Ben is a 1969 graduate of Frankfort High.  After being gone from the area for so long, he decided to reconnect with one of his old high school buddies, Tom Bennett, who resides with his wife, Terry, here in Frankfort.  They got to talking about old times and getting the “old gang” together for a reunion of sorts.  Before they knew it, they were holding a party at Tom and Terri’s home back in the Spring of this year.  What started off as a gathering of about 18 people, turned out to be one of over 60!  That’s when they realized that they were on to something.

Tom and Ben decided to hold a Winter reunion as well.  This time, the Frankfort Country Club would play host to over 120 people.  The event, held this past Tuesday, seemed to be a lot of fun for everyone.  Former teachers, coaches and students mingled and talked about their fond memories of Frankfort High and growing up in Frankfort.

If you are a graduate of Frankfort High School and would like to be included on the next alumni event, contact Ben Smith at bsmith@think2perform.com.  Be sure to include your graduation year and complete contact information.
