Some of the authors you will meet will include:

We will have four great authors who write Kentucky non-fiction at the Gathering of Authors this year.

Steve Flairty has written five titles in the Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes series, including a kids’ version. These collections of heart-warming stories recognize the most important — not the most famous — people in our beloved Kentucky.

Lynwood Montell has written many entertaining collections of Kentucky oral histories. His newest release is Tales from Kentucky Nurses.

Becky Kelley and Kathy Woodhouse are the authors of Wineing Your Way Across Kentucky, a book spotlighting all the wonderful wineries of Kentucky and the wide array of vintages available.

Charles Roe is the author of A Little Gray Spy, a thriller inspired by his work with the FBI, U.S. Navy, and NATO programs. The intrigue goes deep!

Ray Peden is the author of One Tenth of the Law, starring a reluctant hero who discovers that the fire which killed his family 12 years before was not a accident.

Pedestrian access to be closed at ‘Singing Bridge’ in Frankfort

Closure, Singing Bridge

Submitted

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (August 28, 2015) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will be closing pedestrian access to the “Singing Bridge,” a local landmark in downtown Frankfort, due to safety concerns.

Recent data analysis by a consultant engineering firm indicates that this bridge cannot safely accommodate both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.  Several members of this 1893 steel truss have deterioration which reduces its structural capacity, and pedestrian loading further reduces its capacity to carry vehicular traffic.  By closing the bridge to pedestrian traffic, two lanes of vehicular traffic can be safely maintained.

KYTC maintenance crews are gathering the needed signs and materials to restrict pedestrian access on the bridge. Closure of the sidewalks could occur as early as this evening.

The ‘Singing Bridge’, which carries U.S. 60X across the Kentucky River, is posted at a 9-ton weight limit. Vehicles weighing more than 9 tons should utilize the Capital Avenue Bridge to cross the river.

KYTC is working on repair plans for the bridge. Completion of this work and reopening of the sidewalks would occur in the spring of 2016.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.  Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at www.facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and www.twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5 .

SFNA Announces Closure of Singing Bridge Sidewalks

Closure, SFNA, Sidewalk Closure, Singing Bridge, South Frankfort, South Frankfort Neighborhood Association

Transportation Cabinet District 5 is assessing engineering data which indicate that repairs are needed to the truss / structure of the Singing Bridge. The repairs will require the closure of the sidewalks to pedestrian foot traffic.

Right now it is unlikely that this closure will take place tomorrow morning (Fri 28 Aug). We await further details from District 5 and our local public safety / Streets Depts.

It is probable that we could lose pedestrian access until Spring 2016.

KSU & the City Kick Off the 2nd Annual Pay It Forward Frankfort Campaign

Bill May, Frankfort, Kentucky, Kentucky State University, KSU, Mayor Bill May, Pay It Forward, Pay It Forward Frankfort, President Raymond Burse

For the second year in a row, Kentucky State University spearheads the Pay It Forward Frankfort campaign.  KSU President Raymond Burse was presented with a proclamation from Frankfort Mayor Bill May on Thursday, on the steps of Hume Hall, marking the kick-off day of the 100 days of giving in the 2nd Annual Pay It Forward Frankfort project, which initially started from a class project (read more HERE).

The goal of the Pay It Forward Frankfort campaign is to promote community spirit through acts of kindness and encourage people to do good deeds for others in need.  The concept is simple.  That, as a whole community, we can make a difference by creating positive changes in both our community and in our world, one good deed at a time.  KSU, the City of Frankfort, and Franklin County will work as partners to promote 100 continuous days of unsolicited acts of kindness.  From something as volunteering at the local soup kitchen, to monetary donations through their “Give 9” campaign.  The “Give 9” Campaign urges supporters to donate $9, $19, $90, $900 — or any amount that includes the number 9 — “out of love and respect” for President Raymond Burse’s decision in the Fall of 2014 to donate $90,000 of his salary to raise wages for the school’s lowest paid workers.  A decision which made national headlines last year.

The origins of the Pay It Forward Frankfort Campaign actually stem from one professor on the KSU campus, Dr. Shannon Brogan.  An Associate Professor of Speech Communication, Brogan began a class project in April of 2014 in her Persuasive Speaking Class.  The class watched the movie “Pay It Forward” in order to “look for persuasive techniques in the movie”.  Shannon suggested that they all get ribbons that represented themselves and, as they do random acts of kindness for others on campus, give a ribbon to the recipient of the act.  Although the ribbon idea did not really take off, the students did embrace the idea of paying it forward towards others in the form of outreaching into the Frankfort community and building better, stronger relationships.  The idea snowballed and bled into the Frankfort community when Shannon relayed the story to her hairdresser during a hair stylist visit, about how her kids embraced the random acts of kindness and the concept of paying it forward.  In turn, the hairdresser felt the urge to partially pay for her styling during that visit.  When Shannon found out, she was so touched that she realized that the pay it forward project that her students had embraced, could reach even further than beyond Kentucky State’s boundaries.  She and Irma Johnson, with the Office of Regional Stewardship at KSU, came up with the Pay It Forward Frankfort campaign.  And in the Fall of 2014, KSU started a movement with the 100 days of giving in the Pay It Forward Frankfort campaign.

KSU is utilizing social media platforms to reach out into the surrounding community and beyond.  Please help us by giving a “LIKE” to their Pay It Forward Facebook Page, JOINING their Pay It Forward Frankfort 2015 Facebook Group, and by using the hashtag #PayItFwdFrankfort2015 whenever you do a random act of kindness.  Please feel free to share your stories and even ideas to either the group or the page.  These stories, posts and images will be shared at the end of the 100 days of giving at a banquet in December.

Together Frankfort, we can make a difference!
