Want to have fun while helping us out this Saturday?

This Saturday (Oct. 3) marks the debut of the KY History Half, the Commonwealth’s first half marathon celebrating Kentucky’s proud history. This charitable event, taking place in downtown Frankfort starting bright and early that morning, also offers a fun way to support the educational programming and services of the Kentucky Historical Society in its mission to educate and engage the public through Kentucky history in order to confront the challenges of the future. As of today (Monday), we have 500 runners signed up from more than 20 states — and Russia!

An event of this magnitude requires a lot of teamwork, and we’re super excited about the response from the community and from our volunteers and staff in helping make this a successful event.

That’s where we’re hoping you can help, too. We have a few more volunteer posts that need filling, especially along the course routes, showing runners the way to go and cheering them along their way.

If you’d like to be a part of this fun event — and did we mention you’ll get a nifty Race Crew tee along with our gratitude? — please contact KHS’s volunteer coordinator Phyllis Gilman at  phyllis.gilman@ky.gov. She can provide details, including schedule — and sign you up, too!

For more information on the event itself, visit: http://www.kyhistoryhalf.com. And while you’re there, be sure to read the fascinating and inspiring stories behind several of our runners. Maybe you’ll be inspired to sign up too!

Popular fundraising event highlights historic Kentucky homes.

Lexington, Ky.,  SEPTEMBER 23, 2015 – The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency (NHOA) of the Bluegrass seeks a distinguished home to feature for the 2016 Decorator’s Showcase.

Decorator’s Showcase is an opportunity to proudly present a historic Kentucky home for public viewing and spotlight the diverse talent of Kentucky’s top interior and landscape designers. Since 1976, Showcase organizers have chosen designers to redecorate rooms and highlight the beauty of a selected home. The designers of Lexington’s retail store “house” will coordinate designers for the next Showcase.

“Decorator’s Showcase has helped preserve and revitalize some of Central Kentucky’s most notable homes,” said Sherry Huff Culp, Kentucky’s State Long-Term Care Ombudsman and President of NHOA. “At the same time, it helps fund vital long-term care ombudsman services for vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities.”

There are almost 5,250 long-term care beds in 85 nursing homes, personal care homes, and family care homes throughout the 17-county Bluegrass district.”Residents of long-term care facilities are on average about 80 years old and have at least two disabilities. The majority have no visitors and no one looking out for them. Ombudsmen are advocates who go to residents’ bedsides and work to resolve problems,” said Denise Kennedy, Bluegrass District Ombudsman. “As a nonprofit agency, we depend on events like the Decorator’s Showcase in order to continue offering the high level of service we’ve provided for more than three decades.”

The 2016 Showcase will be the 24th house in a venerable tradition that includes historic properties such as The Mansion at Griffin Gate (1978), Bell House (1982), Waveland (1985), Spendthrift Farm (2000) and Highland Hall (2012). Interested parties should contact Laurie Clewett by October 2 in order to be considered as a Spring 2016 Showcase location. All proceeds from the event go toward NHOA’s Bluegrass Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.

About the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass, Inc.

The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass, Inc. (NHOA) is an independent, nonprofit agency founded in 1981. Its mission is to improve the quality of care for residents of long-term care facilities.

KSU Abandons Remedial/Developmental Courses in Favor of ‘Cutting-Edge’ Teaching

KSU Abandons Remedial/Developmental Courses in Favor of ‘Cutting-Edge’ Teaching

Kentucky State University is embracing a new concept of teaching this year that is has been called by many in the area of accelerated teaching “cutting edge.” The first-year program is focused on English and mathematics and is driven by a model of highly skilled teaching designed to elicit remarkable student learning outcomes from students entering the class with varying levels of math and English proficiency.

“This is a bold step that the university has taken,” says Dr. Lorna Shaw-Berbick, dean of KSU.  “In this year, we have done what should have been done years earlier in coming to grips with the understanding that all students, regardless of their entering level of proficiency in a freshman class, bring a level of personal and collective agency that translates into a knowledge base and that this knowledge base creates a dynamic in the classroom that engages the students and holds them in a learning mode.

“It is here,” adds Shaw-Berbick, “that we find our students demonstrating important skills in English and math, when we use their knowledge to build more knowledge.”

Many in the field of contemporary teaching call this concept “student-centered teaching and learning,” and KSU has embarked on this ambitious and increasingly popular program.  While programs like this have gained attention in California and Florida, few colleges in the Commonwealth have abandoned their remedial or developmental courses and have gone to full-scale implementation of Accelerated Learning (AL).

In its first semester, AL is a combination of teacher motivation and student participation.

“That is how learning happens,” says Dr. Erin Wheeler, assistant vice president for academic support.  ”The structure is different – the whole class is different, so we’re not just saying that we are putting them in a 101 (class). We’re changing the way we are teaching all of the classes.”

The program also is a big change for the university’s curriculum because students are in regular classes five days a week for two hours. Three classes are for lecture; two are called “studios” which allows the students additional one-on-one time with instructional counselors. The counselors can look deeper into the students’ assignments and provide them with help in their English and math courses.

The program includes five basic principles: Backwards Design, Just in Time Remediation, Affective Domain, Low Stakes Collaboration and Relevant Thinking. It is based on the California Accelerated Project, and Wheeler says there were talks all across the state and the country to transform the developmental courses to help students reverse low motivation and below-average skills.

“The accelerated teaching method requires faculty to focus on the end, so faculty are using positive, experiential concepts to help (the students) establish connections with theoretical concepts,” Wheeler says. “Motivating the student is a critical part of the teaching model, because, as the research suggests, once students think, I’m not that good at math’ or ‘I didn’t score well on my ACT’ they are already shut out of the learning mode.  So, faculty pay keen attention to students’ affect and use active and collaborative engagement to ensure the classroom becomes the laboratory for student learning.”

The program is up and running, and both Shaw-Berbick and Wheeler are closely eyeing the program to ensure student exit proficiencies meet the expected level performance in math and English.

“Although these are basic freshmen courses, we are throwing all the weight of our support on faculty, students, the curriculum, and the teaching pedagogy because the measure of our success here is a good indicator of how and on what teaching methods we should focus in order to get the best classroom results,” says Shaw-Berwick.  “The University has always been proud of its heritage as a teaching institution and this program may very well help us in crafting our signature on excellent and effective teaching at KSU.”

Downtown Frankfort, Inc, through sponsorship by the Kentucky Employees Credit Union, invites you to join us for our upcoming ArtWalk from 5-8pm on Friday, October 2nd.  Twenty-four ArtStops await you with their creative offerings—paintings, photography, ceramics, collages, jewelry and more—many with artists on hand to welcome you.

If you appreciate beauty along with function, then consider the many artistic crafts on display as downtown Frankfort joins in American Craft Week (10/2-10/11), kicking off this national event’s 6th annual celebration during ArtWalk. And while we recognize and celebrate our numerous, excellent craft offerings, please take note of the many extraordinary works of fine art around us.

Well-established Completely Kentucky, approaching its 25th year in business, offers the works of over 650 of Kentucky’s best artisans in wide array of both crafts and fine art.  M.A. Selbert, our 5th generation family-run jewelry business since 1842, offers jewelry, both fine and functional, along with crafted gift items.

See the latest paintings and collages of Betty Beshoar at her McClure Building studio as well as ceramic tile collages by Gina Morales in her Alchemy Salon down the hall. At Studio 710, you will see Karen Carey’s new oils as well as paintings and scarves by Sandy Gulick and the one-of-a-kind found-object clocks crafted by visiting artist Mark L. Roberts.

Simply Garden, opened in the fall of 2014, has handmade decorative crafts for your home and garden for purchase or for you to create in one of their class offerings.

Shades of Blu Boutique (recently opened in the former Eclectic Mix space) will display the works of numerous local artists along with its jewelry and more.  Meet and welcome to downtown new owner/manager Sherri Hollingsworth. Brand new to downtown is Hallie Gray’s Graymarket Design at 333 St Clair, having its Grand Opening during ArtWalk.  Using her textile design and international relations degrees, Gray designs fresh, modern patterns which are then ethically produced by an artisan cooperative in Jaipur, India.

At the Grand Theatre Gallery, experience a first ever exhibition entitled THE COLOR OF MUSIC, THE SHAPE OF SOUND:  Melanie Sunbeam Smith’s Bird & Bela in B Series which consists of a series of ten mixed media works on paper, inspired by Don Sebesky’s orchestral jazz composition “Bird and Bela in Bb.”

KECU ArtWalk Arts_Sample_large - 10-2-15

Capital Cellars has up for display a mixed water color and oils exhibit by Marie Renee Horne and at Rodgers Studio, photographer Bill Rodgers offers his images from in and around Frankfort, art compositions and portraitures. Nitro of Frankfort hosts young photographer Elizabeth Zoeller, exhibiting images of the people, places, and memories of her deeply beloved downtown Frankfort. At Vibrant Life, see locally made jewelry, fabric crafts and fine artworks as well as imported crafts and more.

DeSpain Studio features the paintings of Donna DeSpain and other artists along with fine art photography and artists’ greeting cards. The Kentucky Coffeetree Café displays the bright and varied artwork of a group of local artists.  Buddy’s Pizza features three local artists with varying styles and mediums.

Full Circle Studio & Gallery (Note its new location—309 Shelby Street), a unique art gallery and working studio, features the works of Jennifer Zingg and Travis Kelley along with that of other local and national artists. Broadway Clay offers a wide selection of created onsite pottery as well as jewelry, paintings and more from local artisans.

Along Bridge Street, there will be two groups of artists on display.  At “117”, the Kentucky State University art major students will “serve up” a gallery of fine art creations along with their special recipe chili in hand-made, take-home ceramic bowls while supplies last. Two doors down, “119” will host four local artists exhibiting their individual styles in a variety of mediums— photography, oils, acrylics, and mixed-media collage.

Paul Sawyier Public Library offers two original Paul Sawyier paintings along with 22 prints, its stained glass windows by Laura Mentor and batik by Doris Thurber. Poor Richard’s Books will feature local author Ray Peden who will sign copies of his novel, One Tenth of the Law.

To take us back a few years, the Capital City Museum hosts the soon-to-close Frankfort Art Club Exhibit.  The club was established in 1945, flourishing until 1962 following the destruction by fire of the Frankfort Hotel.   Similarly, the Franklin County Justice Center displays a “crazy quilt” which appears to have been crafted in 1949, bearing the names of many people associated with the old Peaks Mill School.

Spend a few enjoyable hours during an early October Friday evening in downtown Frankfort, experiencing the vibrant art scene and the city center’s creative energy.  Enjoy re-connecting with friends and making a few new ones.  Large orange ArtWalk pennants at each ArtStop will guide your way with full information available at
