Telling the big story of Kentucky’s small-town capital city

In November of 2004, the Capital City Museum opened its doors to the public. Housed in a 150 year old building that represents all that is left of the Capital Hotel, which burned in 1917, the museum is a large room filled with history and character. There are plenty of details to explore, with exhibits painting a vivid picture of both political and personal life in Kentucky over the past 200 years.

The Capital City Museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday

Admission to the museum is free.

10:00 am – 5:00 pm – White Christmas-The Exhibit, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, 100 W. Broadway.  If “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” is a holiday favorite, come to “White Christmas-the Exhibit” at the Kentucky Historical Society and immerse yourself in the classic movie that starred Kentucky’s own Rosemary Clooney, plus Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen. You’ll see costumes, props and other items associated with the movie like you never before have seen them; hear the stories behind the objects; and test your “White Christmas” knowledge. Items are from the Rosemary Clooney House in Augusta, Kentucky. Price includes all KHS exhibits and sites. Adults: $12; Veterans: $11. Kids: $8; KHS Members: $6. What might sound to us like salad dressing helped our ancestors cope with the cold and flu season. Learn how they treated their symptoms with mustard, vinegar, lemons, turnips and more and make your own old-fashioned remedies. Children ages 5-10 are invited to join us to make their own snow and snow globe.
Free admission (does not include KHS museums and “White Christmas”).

Sunomono with Octopus
Cucumber, onion and tender octopus dressed with sanbaizu (rice vinegar dressing), hijiki (sea vegetable), chili and sesame

Onsen Tamago and Silken Tofu
Local egg gently cooked with made-from-scratch soft tofu, dressed in mirin, sake and shoyu (soy sauce), with grated ginger and sliced scallion

Kamo Nanban Soba
Cold buckwheat soba noodles with green tea-smoked duck breast, rich duck broth gelee and karashi sumiso-zoe (mustard-miso dressing)

Third course

Kabocha no Miso-shiru
Miso soup with kabocha squash, kombu (dried kelp), leek and Saikyo (sweet white) miso

Mabo Nasu
Eggplant, peppers and mushrooms braised with red bean paste and chili paste, with sake and mirin

Buri no Saikyo-zuke
Hamachi yellowtail tuna marinated in miso, sake and mirin, broiled and served with spinach miso sauce

USDA Prime strip steak cut to bite-size pieces, seared in cast iron, glazed with Japanese barbecue sauce and topped with chopped vegetables and herbs

Back by popular demand, it’s our Saturday Pizza and Paint! Drop the kids off and let them create a different painting on canvas each week while you go out and run some errands, spend a quiet couple of hours with your significant other, or chillax in the comfort of your own home and have the tv to aaaaaalll to yourself.

The cost is only $25 per kid, that includes all painting materials, and all the pizza they can eat. Kids will get to take their paintings home. Don’t miss out on booking early since these fill up really quick. We will be hosting this event every Saturday from now until March 12, 2016
