As the Kentucky All “A” Classic continued into the Quarter Final Round at the Frankfort Convention Center on Friday, so too did the hopes and dreams of two local teams.  The Frankfort High School Lady Panthers came into the tournament representing Region 11 for the girls.  With a record of 9-8, the Lady Panthers are an impressive group to watch led by seniors Brianna Burbridge and Jasmine Turpin.

The Frankfort High School Lady Panthers advanced to the Quarter Final Round after decisively defeating Menifee County, 72 – 50, in the Opening Round of the tournament on Wednesday.  With an All “A” record setting 48 points, Burbridge led the Lady Panthers to the victory.  But their next opponent, Harlan County, the Region 13 girls’ representative, came into the tournament with a record of 18-3, and also had a decisive victory over Bracken County, 55 – 30 in their game of the Opening Round of the tournament.

The entire Frankfort Independent School District showed up to showed up Friday morning to cheer on their Lady Panthers.  Students and faculty from grades 1st through 8th from Second Street School, as well as the entire student body of Frankfort High School, walked the several blocks to cheer on their team. Even Frankfort Mayor Bill May, himself a Frankfort High Alum, showed up to support the girls. It was a heartwarming show of support for a team from en entire community!

The Lady Panthers led the gave over Harlan County, 9-6 at the end of the 1st Quarter. They looked strong and confident through that period. They went into the locker room at the half with a tied score of 26 – 26. But at the end of the game, the score of 67 – 50, with the Lady Panthers on the losing end, put an end to their hopes of advancing to the Semi Finals Round.  The Harlan County Lady Dragons proved to be too fierce for the scrappy Frankfort team, as Junior Jordan Brock racked up 39 of the 67 points.  Harlan County will take on Owensboro Catholic on Saturday in the 12 o’clock Semi Final game of the KY All “A”.

It was quite a different story for the Region 8 boys’ team from Owen County.  With an 18-2 record, the Owen County Rebels are red hot to watch.  They also bring an impressive crowd of supporters into the Frankfort Convention Center arena.  Both their Thursday and Friday night supporters numbered in the hundreds.  Led by a seasoned group of talented seniors, this team seems to read each others’ minds on the hardwood. Keeping the game close during the first half of the Quarter Final game against the Morgan County Cougars, the Rebels built a comfortable lead in the 3rd period and went on to win the game, 64 – 58.  The Owen County Rebels advance to the Semi Final game against the 17 – 4 Murray Tigers, the boys’ Region 1 representatives.  The game will be played at the Frankfort Convention Center on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
