As the best of the best from the sixteen regions of the Kentucky All “A” Classic Basketball Tournament made their way to the semi-final round on Saturday, local favorite and Region 8 boys’ basketball team, the Owen County Rebels, joined Cordia, Newport Central Catholic and Murray in the hunt for the All “A” Classic title.  The girls’ basketball teams playing for a spot in the championship game were Owensboro Clatholic, Harlan County, Murray, and Newport Central Catholic.

With a win over Harlan County, Owensboro Catholic advanced to the championship game to face off against Murray, who defeated Newport Central Catholic, 45-28, to take a second shot at the Championship that slipped away from them in the 2015 All “A” Classic Tournament.  The first boys game of the day saw the defending champions, Newport Central Catholic lose to the “little school that could”, Cordia School, 47-41. And, in a heartbreaking loss to Murray, the Owen County Rebels ended their run for the All “A” Championship at the buzzer, with a 3-point shot.  Final score was 44-47, Murray. This set up an opportunity for history to be in the making as the Murray was sending both their boys’ and girls’ teams to state championship games.
