It happens every year during commonwealth’s legislative session. Hundreds of fine folks from Western Kentucky travel to Frankfort to mingle with their representatives, express their concerns to their senators, and enjoy the friendship of their respective local, city and county leaders. They represented local chamber of commerce, local tourism, local businesses, future leaders. This year, a large contingency of youth even made the trek from across the state to meet these leaders, and learn about how our democratic process is run on a state level. No doubt, with aspirations of becoming a leader one day themselves. About 800 people poured into the Frankfort Convention Center Thursday night for the annual “Western Kentucky Thank You Night”. They enjoyed world renowned Bar-B-Que from three of the best places west of the I-65! They were honored with a visit by Governor Matt Bevin. And were treated to some of the best R&B music possible.
What many did not realize, however, was that the drummer of that R&B band was none other than our own Frankfort Mayor, Bill May. They also probably did not understand the significance of having that band there, either. How could they know? But things happen for a reason. And the leadership of Frankfort pulled together to make magic happen for this event!
The band that was scheduled for this BIG event cancelled at the last minute on Wednesday. With only 24 hours before the start of the event, phone calls were being made to scramble to find a replacement band. One of those calls made was to the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Carmen Inman. Knowing his affection for music and his obvious ties to the music industry, Inman placed a call to our own Frankfort Mayor Bill May. Who, with less than a day’s notice, was able to pull in TOP NOTCH entertainment for this event in the form of the Tee Dee Young Band.
Now, that may not mean anything to many people. But in Lexington, he seems to be quite the legend. Tee Dee Young won BEST BLUES ARTIST at the Lexington Music Awards this year. The TEE DEE YOUNG Band was honored to be chosen as a Finalist competing at the 2015 International Blues Challenge (IBC), representing The Blues, Jazz and Folk Society of the Mid Ohio Valley. They competed against 250 bands, with 45 of those acts traveling in from overseas. His band also took top honors in 2011.
I was very honored to have been joined by such incredible musicians who also happen to be wonderful people.
Thursday night’s band consisted of Tee Dee Young – Vocals/guitar, Dan Jackson – saxophone, Cory Kennedy – keyboards, and our very own Frankfort Mayor Bill May – drums. Bill had never played with this talented group before. But from what we heard, you would never had known that!
In a quote from the Mayor on social media reads, “I was very happy to be part of such a nice event for our friends from the western part of Kentucky. Thanks, for asking me to get the group together. I was very honored to have been joined by such incredible musicians who also happen to be wonderful people.”
That’s how we roll in Frankfort! We pull TOGETHER to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!
