The 2016 Governor’s Derby Celebration will go down as one of the most well attended downtown Derby Day events in recent history. On Saturday, ideal weather, tons of family friendly activities, food, and music, brought even Kentucky Governor Bevin and his kids down for a while to enjoy and engage in the festivities. From the YMCA sponsored Derby Dash for the kids, to the Pedal for the Posies, sponsored by Folkbike Recyclery, this year’s event was loads of fun! The Kentucky Historical Society always welcomes young and young at heart onto the Old State Capitol lawn to enjoy pony stick races, and to make your own Derby Hat with tons of volunteers, ribbons, bows and flowers to decorate your prized Derby Hat. With musical entertainment on the main stage sponsored by Jim Beam, Sammy Coulter and Company, the Frankfort School of Ballet, the Kentucky State University band, and London-based group, the Frontier Band, entertained all morning and well into the early afternoon. Visitors and locals alike were able to meet the likes of Abe and Mrs. Lincoln, the Dixie Belles, and a beautiful horse from the stables at the Kentucky Horse Park. While kids enjoyed pony rides, bounce houses, and an assortment of games and activities for all ages. The Derby Celebration began as a “breakfast”. Retailers downtown offered breakfast, lunch and dinner at their establishments all day. This year’s celebration was a success! We can’t wait to see what they have in store for next year.
