Telling the big story of Kentucky’s small-town capital city

In November of 2004, the Capital City Museum opened its doors to the public. Housed in a 150 year old building that represents all that is left of the Capital Hotel, which burned in 1917, the museum is a large room filled with history and character. There are plenty of details to explore, with exhibits painting a vivid picture of both political and personal life in Kentucky over the past 200 years.

The Capital City Museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday

Admission to the museum is free.

1:30 pm – Guided Tour of Historic Liberty Hall, at Liberty Hall Historic Site, 218 Wilkinson Street.

Guided tours of Liberty Hall are given Monday-Saturday and depart from Liberty Hall located at 218 Wilkinson Street at 1:30 pm. Tours by appointment may be made during normal office hours with advance notice of 7 days. Guided tours last approximately 75 minutes, ending in the museum store.  Las paseos en Español disponibles con cita; habla con Becky Shipp.

The grounds of Liberty Hall Historic Site are open to the public daily, dawn to dusk. Leashed dogs are allowed on the grounds. Photographers are welcome with a pass; click here to read more about our photo policy.

Tour Prices

$6 for adults (18+)
$3 for youth (age 5-18)
Free for children (under age 5)

School tours must be scheduled in advance.  The fee for school tours is $3.00 per child.  One chaperon per every 10 children is free; each additional adult pays $5.00. To schedule a school tour, call (502) 227-2560 or contact us by email.

Accessibility

The first floor of the Orlando Brown House is wheelchair accessible via a ramp on Wapping Street, adjacent to the building. A handicapped-accessible restroom is also available at the Orlando Brown House.  Please call for more information. Liberty Hall is not wheelchair accessible.

This is an advanced Facebook class for those who have set up an account and are familiar with the basics but would like information about other more intricate usage. Review privacy settings, create Facebook groups and friends lists, stop game requests, block or unfollow posts, and more!

6:00 – 8:00 pm – Nature Photography Club (for youth ages 11-17), at Josephine Sculpture Park, 3355 Lawrenceburg Rd (3/4 Mile South of Capital Bowl), Frankfort

Play with light, explore the outdoors, and learn photography techniques to capture nature’s wonders.

Each workshop will explore an aspect of nature photography and allow time to practice on the JSP grounds.

Assignments between workshops and thoughtful critiques will push your skills to the next level.

Finally, you’ll select your best work to be printed for a group show at the Fall Arts Festival!

For ages 11-17, beginner and intermediate level. No photography experience is required, just an interest and a curiosity to explore.

This Photo Club workshop is FREE, but registration for each meeting is required.
The Photo Club will meet every Wednesday from July 27 – August 31, 6:00-8:00 pm (6 classes).

Attendance to at least 4 classes is required for inclusion in the JSP Fall Arts Festival Exhibit (Sep. 11).

Supplies

Participants may use their own digital camera or reserve one. A digital SLR, point-and-shoot or other device that allows adjustment of exposure settings is required. Contact Karen at klanierphoto@gmail.com to reserve a Canon Powershot A800 digital point-and-shoot.

Printing will be an additional expense, estimated at $10-$30 per high-quality, mounted, enlargement.

Instructor

Karen Lanier is a naturalist, photographer, author, and environmental educator who earned a unique degree in Environmental Documentation, the fusion of conservation studies and documentary storytelling. She has led youth photography classes and workshops since 2011, and prefers to see the world through a child’s eye.

This workshop is sponsored by the Kentucky Foundation For Women.
