Telling the big story of Kentucky’s small-town capital city

In November of 2004, the Capital City Museum opened its doors to the public. Housed in a 150 year old building that represents all that is left of the Capital Hotel, which burned in 1917, the museum is a large room filled with history and character. There are plenty of details to explore, with exhibits painting a vivid picture of both political and personal life in Kentucky over the past 200 years.

The Capital City Museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday

Admission to the museum is free.

Kentucky River Music and BBQ Fest is an annual event, held every year on the last weekend of July at the Kentucky River Campground.  This year’s event will take place on July 29-30.  We bring in some of the best and diverse musical acts from around the State.   There is also a BBQ contest (CANCELLED) held on Saturday.  Following the contest, BBQ ribs and pulled pork will be served along with a pot luck dinner (CANCELLED).  The BBQ is compliments of Up In Smoke BBQ and Northside RV.

Kentucky River Campground Music & BBQ Festival - July 2016

12:30 – 3:30 pm – Scenic Train Ride, at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum, 175 Beasley Road, Versailles

Enjoy a ride through the rolling Kentucky countryside! Learn about railroading and local history! View tiny trains as they transverse tiny twisting tracks!

The Museum and Gift Shop open at 12:30, while the train will depart at 2. The ride is approximately 90 minutes, and includes a mid-ride stop, with the opportunity for passengers to disembark, walk up to the edge of the Young’s High Bridge, and overlook the Kentucky River Palisades.

There are restrooms at the station, but not on the train.

Bluegrass Railroad Museum Scenic Train Ride - Summer 2016

1:30 pm – Guided Tour of Historic Liberty Hall, at Liberty Hall Historic Site, 218 Wilkinson Street.

Guided tours of Liberty Hall are given Monday-Saturday and depart from Liberty Hall located at 218 Wilkinson Street at 1:30 pm. Tours by appointment may be made during normal office hours with advance notice of 7 days. Guided tours last approximately 75 minutes, ending in the museum store.  Las paseos en Español disponibles con cita; habla con Becky Shipp.

The grounds of Liberty Hall Historic Site are open to the public daily, dawn to dusk. Leashed dogs are allowed on the grounds. Photographers are welcome with a pass; click here to read more about our photo policy.

School tours must be scheduled in advance.  The fee for school tours is $3.00 per child.  One chaperon per every 10 children is free; each additional adult pays $5.00. To schedule a school tour, call (502) 227-2560 or contact us by email.

Accessibility

The first floor of the Orlando Brown House is wheelchair accessible via a ramp on Wapping Street, adjacent to the building. A handicapped-accessible restroom is also available at the Orlando Brown House.  Please call for more information. Liberty Hall is not wheelchair accessible.

Coloring isn’t just for kids anymore! Adult coloring books, most featuring more intricate designs than the traditional children’s variety, offer a fun way to unwind and tap into your creativity. In fact, studies have shown that coloring can be therapeutic, serving as an excellent stress reliever and a way to improve focus and mindfulness. We invite adult patrons to beat the summer heat by joining us for an afternoon of coloring and relaxation (in the A/C!) on Saturday, July 30 from 2:00pm-4:00pm. No registration is required, just drop in! All materials will be provided.

Color Me Calm - Red Hot Summertime at the PSPL - 7-30-16

Join Kentucky Heartwood for a one-of-a-kind festival featuring a youth music contest, art exhibitors, children’s activities, a chalk drawing competition, hands-on workshops, a folk dance, and entertainment by original bands Native Invaders and John and Will Owen Gage.

We can’t wait to see you at this amazing gathering of people!

Registration fee for the music competition is $10.00 per act.

Admission fee for all others is $7.00 per person; children 12 and under are free. All workshops are free with registration.

6:00 – 9:00 pm – Summer Concert Series: Featuring Donny Brook and Red State BBQ, at Prodigy Vineyards & Winery, 4686 Versailles Rd, Frankfort

Join us for the 1st annual Rhythm & Roots Summer Vineyard Concert Series. These family friendly concerts take place on the Peach Family Farm set against the backdrop of Prodigy’s Vineyards. We invite local, very talented musicians to perform and local food vendors to prepare delicious food. Enjoy a night of music and food with award winning wine or beer with family and friends!

Concerts take place the second and fourth Saturday of the month, July – September. Dates are July 16, July 30, August 13, August 27, September 10 and September 27.

$5 cover. Wine Club members receive free admission and priority seating. Reserved seating is available by calling the winery prior to the day of the concert. This is a family friendly event, and attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, tents, etc, for comfortable concert viewing.

Events are rain or shine. Dogs are welcome on a leash. There will be designated smoking areas.

Coolers and outside food or drink are not permitted.

July 30 concert features Donny Brook is a pop-rock hit cover band from the late 60’s to today. They stay true to the original versions of each of their covers, they provide experience that any music lover would enjoy.
