DANVILLE, Ky. August 17, 2016 – The Community Arts Center in Danville, Kentucky, has announced its fall 2016 class schedule. Classes for adults and children are now open for registration via the Arts Center website (www.communityartscenter.net). Most classes begin the week of September 5th.

Classes for Kids (Kindergarten – 8th grade)

Mini Masters is a popular mixed media class that introduces students in grades K-3 to a different famous artist each week. Students learn a bit about the artist’s life and work, then create artwork inspired by the master. For older students in grades 4-8, Drawing for Kids introduces aspiring artists to foundational concepts in visual arts while helping them learn to draw faces, people, landscapes, and more.

This fall, the Arts Center’s youth ceramics program will grow to include a new class for students in grades K-3 along with a class for 4th through 8th graders. Both Kids Pottery classes will take place on Saturday mornings. Younger students will have the chance to create a variety of work including pinch pots, coil and slab pieces, and free-form sculpture. Older students will begin exploring more complicated hand-building techniques. In both classes, each student will create several pieces learning the entire process of sculpting, from initial modeling, firing, glazing, and then presenting work to the public at a public reception at the end of the semester.

Rounding out the fall youth art schedule is the return of the popular Act Up! Children’s Theater Workshop. This fourteen-week youth drama program introduces children to the magic of the theater. Students in the younger class (K-3) will dive into the world of theater, mastering the fundamentals of good performance and learning songs, dances, and scenes. Older students in grade 4-8 will work on character development, scene study, character arcs, and more. Both classes are suitable for children with or without prior performance experience and no reading is required in the K-3 class. All children in both classes have the opportunity to perform for the public in an end-of-class showcase.

Classes for Adults (ages 14+)

Dr. Barbara Hall, Emerita, of Centre College will be offering eight weeks of Group Voice Lesson, starting September 15th. This class will focus on the basics of good singing technique that will make singing easier and more beautiful for any style of singing.  Posture, breathing, resonance, range, and diction will be some of the areas that we will work on.  Using a variety of vocalises (vocal exercises) and a few songs, students will put into practice good vocal technique.  An optional final solo performance at a recital with invited guests will end the term.

The Arts Center’s ceramics program continues to grow with the addition of a new Adult Ceramics Sampler class that will allow students to experiment with a variety of ceramics techniques, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, and slip-casting. For more dedicated fans of the wheel, instructor Jonas Hurley will continue to offer Wood-Fired Wheel-Thrown Pottery.

In addition to ceramics instruction, the fall class lineup includes a new Introduction to Printmaking course. Students will create wood and lino-cut blocks, as well as dabbling in other media. This class concludes with a day at instructor Jonas Hurley’s farm to pull prints on his printing press!

The final piece of the Arts Center’s adult class lineup is weekly Introduction to Printmaking with popular instructor Wes Bratcher. Classes take place every Thursday evening, with a beginner class at 6pm followed by an intermediate class at 7pm. Each class costs $10 and preregistration is not required. Couples and singles are both welcome to participate in classes – no partner needed!

Paint Your Own Pottery Studio

In addition to formal class instruction, the Arts Center’s new Paint-Your-Own-Pottery (POP) Studio is now open every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors to the studio select and decorate a piece of unpainted bisque pottery, leaving it to be fired in the Arts Center kiln. Later this fall, the Arts Center plans to debut several POP Studio classes, similar in design to its popular Starry Night Studio painting classes.

The Community Arts Center is located at 401 W. Main St. in downtown Danville, KY. The Arts Center is open to the public Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the Community Arts Center and to register for classes, visit www.communityartscenter.net.
