On your mark, Get set, Go!! Runners, walkers and leprechauns alike ~ Good Shepherd Catholic School’s Run For The Gold is scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, March 17, and includes not only the run itself, but also an afternoon packed with activities and fun in downtown Frankfort. Don your green attire and come downtown to celebrate St. Patty’s day!

The fun begins on St. Clair at 5:30pm. Join local bagpiper, Keith Murphy, for a stroll through downtown. Then, at 5:45p the Lexington Irish Dancers take the stage. After the dancers’ performance, the runners/walkers will line up at Main Street and St. Clair.

At 6:15pm, runners and walkers of all levels (including a leprechaun or two!) will lace up their shoes and gather to prepare for the race itself, which benefits Good Shepherd’s Visual and Performing Arts program. The race begins at 6:30pm on the corner of St. Clair and Main streets. Registration for the Run/Walk is $17 through March 15. You can download a form at www.gssfrankfort.org or register online here.

Beat the crowds and come downtown on Thursday to pick up your race packet anytime from 9am-6pm at CKY: Canoe Kentucky.  Late Registration and Packet Pick-up will be Thursday, March 16 and Friday, March 17 from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. at CKY: Canoe Kentucky, 301 W Main Street. The Late registration fee is $25.

Meanwhile the Frankfort Yoga Studio will offer a free pre-run Yoga class for runners on Friday from 5:15pm-5:50pm on the Old Capitol lawn.

After the race, join us for the judging for the Crazy Costume Contest in front of CKY: Canoe Kentucky. One lucky leprechaun will receive a gift certificate for a one night stay including breakfast at The Meeting House Bed & Breakfast~ the sponsor of the Crazy Costume Contest.

The Run for the Gold award ceremony is scheduled for 7:30pm on St. Clair where medals for the overall top male and female runner and the top three runners in 15 different age groups will be awarded. The winner of the Top Referral Contest will also be announced.  The participant who refers the most runners receives a bag of running goodies donated by Cool Comfort Body & Sole.

The “Run for the Gold” is the second race of the new Frankfort Striders Run/Walk Series. More information on the other races is available on the Frankfort Striders Run/Walk Series website (www.frankfortstriders.com). Participate in at least 7 of the races to receive a commemorative glass, participate in 10 and receive a glass and a series t-shirt or participate in at least 13 and receive a glass, a series t-shirt, a long sleeve tech t-shirt and a plaque!  Anyone who participates in at least 7 of the races also receives a ticket to the Series Celebration.  Jackson Construction is sponsoring the prizes.

Downtown businesses are also getting in on the celebration with “green” specials and fun activities. Come shop, be entertained and/or dine before or after the race.

There is a St. Paddy’s Day Celebration at Capital Cellars.  Traditional Live Irish Music provided by the Irish Hats of Hope Lutheran Church from 6:00pm-9:00pm.  Purchase Irish Food served by the “Ladies of Hope”.  Remember to show your race bib and receive 10% off any food or drink before or after the race.

Completely Kentucky is offering 17% off anything “green”. Be sure to check your race bag for a $10 off coupon.

Before or after the Run, stop by the Meeting House located just a couple blocks off of Broadway at the corner of Ann Street and Mero Street (519 Ann St.) for their traditional Irish Dinner. For $13.95, you can feast on the traditional corn beef and cabbage with potatoes, turnips and carrots. Owners Rose and Gary Burke will also be serving homemade Irish soda bread and desserts. You can even tip your hat with a tall glass of green beer or wine or a hot Irish coffee drink.  They will be serving the dinner from 10:00am-9:00pm. 

Poor Richards Bookshop is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by offering a storewide discount of 17%.

Old Capitol Antiques on Broadway has a selection of Irish items for sale including a silver Irish rosary, vintage Irish tea towels, Irish recipes and maps of Ireland. Show your race bib and receive 10% off your purchase.
