It’s that time of year again. Time for the 2017 Reality Store for our Franklin County youth. As always, the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting this educational opportunity and Kentucky Employees Credit Union is the corporate sponsor. This is the perfect moment for business leaders to connect with and inspire the future leaders of our community. Time is of the essence to sign up since this event takes place on Thursday, November 9, 2017. Volunteers can choose to mentor for a full or a half day.
Volunteers Needed for Reality Store Project
What’s one of the most enlightening ways for high school students to learn about the real world relationship of education and career opportunities, lifestyle choices and monthly budgets? The Chamber’s Education Committee believes that it is the Reality Store! Reality Store is a hands-on interactive educational experience that will be presented to all area eighth grade students on November 9, 2017 at Thorn Hill Education Center.
Similarly to the game of “Life”, each student will receive an assigned occupation and monthly income based on their grade performance in school. They then proceed through the Reality Store – booths manned by business community volunteers that represent everything from housing choices to taxes. In each instance, the student must make a choice and reduce the corresponding cost from their income. The point of the simulation game is to make choices that fit within the assigned income…. and allow for unexpected expenses!
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
Uncle Sam Health & Beauty
Luxury Items/Travel Insurance/Medical/Dental
Housing Clothing & Grocery Supplemental Income Transportation Child Care Utilities & Telephone
The Reality Store day begins at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast for our volunteers and ends at 3:00 p.m. Students will be arriving by bus throughout the day. Both morning and afternoon volunteer slots are available at this time. If you would like to get in on this exciting experience, please complete the volunteer form below and fax it to the Chamber office at your earliest convenience.
