With the tragic loss of the Frankfort Convention Center, Frankfort and Franklin County is losing out on millions of tourism dollars worth of revenues from events, concerts, tournaments, and concerts that were once held there. Community leaders were left scrambling to rearrange and accommodate already planned events. Unfortunately, the successful basketball tournaments were forced to go elsewhere within the commonwealth. For instance, cities like Richmond picked up the All “A” Tournament that brought thousands of people from across Kentucky to Frankfort, many of which stayed in hotels, ate at our restaurants and purchased our goods while here. Thanks to joint leadership between Kentucky State University and city and county officials, the Kentucky Dance Coaches Organization State Dance Competition was once again able to return to Frankfort on Saturday and Sunday.

Dozens of high school and middle school dance teams from across the commonwealth descended upon KSU’s Exum Gym to once again show off their best moves. These students on these teams brought their support groups, their families and friends, who packed the house. They also ventured into our community. Those who traveled long distances, also may have stayed in our hotels and ate at our restaurants. The loss of the convention center was crippling to the community. But Frankfort being able to once again host this state level competition only proves that we may be down, but we are certainly not out!
