Frankfort’s ArtWalk a Sweet Mix of Art and Fun for Loved Ones

On Friday, the Kentucky Employee’s Credit Union (KECU) sponsored the Winter ArtWalk, hosted by Downtown Frankfort, Inc.  Seventeen venues in downtown Frankfort displayed art of every medium.  Several artists held receptions at various locations during this time.  Although the weather was rather chilly, it didn’t keep many from sharing this event with loved ones.  The winter ArtWalk is usually billed as the “SweetArt” walk.  It is an event that you to spend time with your sweetheart, or even family, enjoying the vibrant art scene in Frankfort.

Capital City Museum took this opportunity to officially open their temporary exhibit on the Frankfort Art Club entitled “Out of the Shadows: Memories of the 1945 Frankfort Art Club”.  The exhibit features original art work from the founding members, as well as photos over the decades of it’s existence.  During the opening reception, live performances of scenes from an upcoming performance of “Our Town” by the Frankfort High School drama students.

Down at Capital Cellars, painter Phyllis Rogers showed her works in oil, acrylics and watercolor, while customers warmed up with their favorite spirit or their complimentary wine tasting paired with a variety of chocolates.

At the Kentucky Coffeetree Café, one was able to enjoy art by local abstract acrylic artist Sarah Morgan, whose artwork interprets life, individuality, love and the pursuit of equality.  Many attended to with family and friends.

The Grand Theatre hosted an artist reception for Georgetown artist Karen Mitchell LaBach’s “Art of Jazz”, whose expressionistic paintings of jazz musicians come alive with color and energy.   The artist is just as colorful as her art – dressing as a flapper from the roaring 20’s during her reception.  Her painting will be on display at the Grand through February.

A variety of artists and mediums can always be found at the Eclectic Mix.  From the photographic art of local photographer extraordinaire Gene Burch, to local area landscape artist Cheryl Olds Cheek, and mixed media artists Sallie Clay Lanham and Laura Noe, this venue is a perfect place to expose youngsters to Frankfort’s art scene.

A late addition, but a very popular stop on Friday’s ArtWalk was the Land and Water Trust sponsored Youth Art Show, held down on Bridge Street.  This exhibit was a collection of Franklin and Anderson County’s finest youth artists, representing each of the high schools in the two counties.  The young artists were on hand to discuss their work, which includes a mix of media.  Kentucky State University was also on hand to sell their clay bowls with hot chili.  Perfect for the cold night!

If you were not able to enjoy this ArtWalk through downtown Frankfort, don’t fret none.  There will be another one held Friday, May 15, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.  To stay informed about the next event, check often with Downtown Frankfort’s website HERE.

DANVILLE, Ky.  (Monday, Aug. 4, 2014) – Three artists of varying styles will share different interpretations of nature in exhibits opening this week at the Community Arts Center in Danville, Ky. Mixed media works, impressionist-style paintings and digitally altered photographs will be on view free of charge from Wednesday, Aug. 6 through Saturday, Sept. 27 at the corner of 4th and Main in downtown Danville. A public artists reception will be held this Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Arts Center’s largest exhibit space, the Grand Hall, will be home to Marco Logsdon’s exhibit of mixed media pieces entitled “Weathered and Reclaimed.” Logsdon was born in Seville, Spain and grew up in Arkansas. He has called the Bluegrass Region home since attending Asbury College in the 1980s.

”I have always had a studio and my desire to create art is a necessary part of my existence,” says Logsdon. “The process keeps me from feeling lost. I have shown in galleries across the US and have kept active in the Chicago gallery I set up while living there for a year. I have always either held a job or have worked on non-art projects to create a balance. My hope is that this balance and some craftsmanship are evident in my work.”

Many of his works are landscapes on reclaimed wood.

“The main objective of my current work is to create awareness of the amount of wood and other materials that are destined for the landfill unless someone breaks the cycle and finds a way to put it to use,” he says. “I have been playing with a planetary landscape idea for several years, which I refer to as Tar Landscapes.”

In the Farmers Gallery on the Arts Center’s second floor, impressionist paintings by Donna Forgacs are on exhibit in “My Year with Monet: Paintings Inspired by the Impressionist Master.”

Like Monet, many of Forgacs’ paintings are a reflection of her appreciation for the beauty of nature. The inspiration for this particular exhibit was a 2013 mini-calendar full of works by Monet. She would look at the paintings featured each month and search her photo files for something similar.

“I think landscape painting and beautiful art will always be relevant. It records not only the beauty of nature, but also our history – cultures and peoples over time,” says Forgacs. “It is and can become historical documents, as has been evidenced in the past.”

Her many visits to France over the past 20 years have no doubt influenced her artistic works as well.

“It is like going home, no matter which part of the country we visit. My mother loved all things France also – furniture, paintings, books, fabrics. Maybe that is partially also why it seems “familiar” to me… France surrounds me, is a part of who I am and what is created no matter what comes out onto the canvas here in Danville, Kentucky.”

The third artist on exhibit this month, Geri Trinler, is also a lover of nature and travel. Her exhibit, “Here, There and Everywhere,” is a gathering of photographs and digital art upstairs in the Lockhart Gallery.

This is Trinler’s first exhibit. She has been drawing and painting most of her life, and has been interested in photography since grade school. After many years working in publishing and computer graphics, she has recently realized that technological advancements have given her new, unlimited possibilities to express her creativity. She now works with computers to bring these components and skills together.

“Now, with the wonderful computer programs available to photographers, I can take my photography to a whole new level and let my imagination soar,” she says. “My exhibit “Here, There and Everywhere” is composed of photographs showing the places I love and my creativity in altering some them to look like paintings.”

These exhibits are free and open to the public Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many of the artworks on display will be for sale.

The public is also invited to a free artists reception Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. This is an opportunity to be among the first to view these exhibits with friends and family, while also meeting the artists and enjoying light refreshments.

Exhibit shows Kentucky and the world through the eyes of two newcomers to Danville

DANVILLE, Ky. (Wednesday, April 2, 2014) – This Saturday, April 5, a new exhibit entitled “New Eyes in Danville” opens at the Community Arts Center. Drawings, prints and photographs by recent central Kentucky transplants Rochelle Bayless and Nick Lacy will be on display through Saturday, May 3.

Bayless and Lacy moved to Danville from Connecticut in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Since then, they’ve explored the region, created new works and reflected on old ones. This exhibit will highlight past memories and new discoveries of this husband and wife team.

“The Community Arts Center is a wonderful place to exhibit work, with the open space of the Grand Hall and the intimacy of the upstairs gallery,” said Lacy. “[For this exhibit] I have paired a Danville or Kentucky photo with a photo from my work before moving here. Choosing was fun: pick a new Kentucky photo, and then jump down into my leftover brain cells for traces of an older photo that played well with the new.”

Lacy’s inclination is toward documentary photography, with the goals of telling stories of everyday life and seeing ordinary people, places and things in a new way. Bayless seeks to find the beautiful and interesting in what otherwise might be considered ugly and boring. Using classic color theory principles and a spontaneous response, her work challenges the viewer to see the unexpected in the expected and uncover layers beneath the first glance.

An Oregon native, Lacy describes himself as an “instinctual, from the hip shooter,” someone who reacts and clicks, as opposed to “an analytical photographer.” He became a photographer in high school at his mother’s request, and still uses the camera she gave him – a 1955 Leica IIF. He is currently a freelance photographer in non-traditional portraiture, dance, nonprofit organizations and all levels of educational institutions.

Bayless is an award-winning artist, photographer and graphic designer whose work has been widely exhibited throughout New England and is housed in several permanent collections. This is her first exhibit in Kentucky.

The works of both artists are for sale. Bayless’s range from $300 to $1,500, and Lacy’s are priced from $30 to $500.

Bayless and Lacy will both be on hand to meet the public at a free reception Thursday, April 10, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arts Center. Light refreshments will be served.

The Community Arts Center exhibits are open Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for this exhibit is free.

Story by Joshua L. Witt, Event Volunteer

(859) 749-2080

Frankfort, Kentucky – February 22, 2014 – Following the success of their first benefit concert held two weeks ago, the non-profit Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund announced today that another event has been scheduled.  Up and coming local fan favorite, Borrowed Blue, will open for the legendary Grammy Award winning Kentucky Headhunters on Saturday, April 19 at the Frankfort Convention Center.  Tickets go on sale Saturday, March 1 and will be available at www.etix.com.    “Continuation of the Memorial Fund’s benefit concert series is critical as we seek $500,000 in new fundraising by Memorial Day,” stated Joshua Witt, a Memorial Fund volunteer assisting with the upcoming concert.

In an effort to share the vision of the Kentucky National Guard Memorial project with those most affected by the effort, all veterans and related personnel with a current military ID will be admitted to the concert for free.  General admission tickets for all others will be $20.  Limited reserve seating and Meet & Greet/VIP packages will be available online.  It is hoped that a capacity crowd of 4,600 will attend the concert and show their support for the Memorial.

All proceeds from the event will go toward the cost of construction.  The Memorial will be built at the entrance of Boone National Guard Center, along US 127 in Frankfort.  Intent is to break ground on Memorial Day and complete the project by Veterans Day in November.  It is hoped that the upcoming concert will raise an additional $100,000.  A final benefit concert has already been slated for August 23, featuring Sunday Best and the Charlie Daniels Band.  Details are still being finalized.  Tickets are expected to be available by early April.

While the Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund initially began their fundraising effort four years ago, recent support from major donors and events has made a tremendous impact.  On February 15, all Wal-Mart stores across Kentucky began a forty-five day campaign in support of the Memorial Project.   “Guardsmen and their families are our Associates, customers, and neighbors,” stated Mr. Kevin Thompson, Director Public Affairs & Government Relations for Wal-Mart.  All money being raised from Wal-Mart is coming from volunteers, individual donors, and market wide initiatives.  Many other fundraising activities are currently in the works including a 5K run/walk, motorcycle rally and Derby themed black tie dinner.

Once completed, the memorial will recognize past, current and future Kentucky National Guard Soldiers and Airmen.  “Just since September 11, 2001, eighteen Kentucky National Guard Soldiers have given their lives in support of the Global War on Terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan,” declared memorial fund Board Member, Colonel Charlie Jones.  “This memorial will not only remember these brave men, but it will also serve as a symbol that we, the Citizens of Kentucky, will not forget any of our Guardsmen – even those who serve in years to come.”

In 2013 the memorial fund raised $267,000 through numerous corporate and individual contributions, as well as several Memorial led fundraising events.  The February 8 benefit concert performance of Exile and Delbert McClinton gathered over 1,000 attendees to the Frankfort Convention Center and provided over $70,000 in fundraising support.  Memorial Fund volunteers encourage Kentuckians to get involved in the project and to actively participate in efforts taking place across the Commonwealth.
