For a couple years now, Capital Living has been reporting on dreams coming true at Ashwood Place Retirement Residences through the national Second Wind Dreams Program. Each year, the national Second Wind Dreams organization recognizes the TOP members, volunteers, the “Dream Weavers” and dreams, from the previous years. This year, our very own Frankfort not only made a STRONG showing with Top 5 Extraordinary Nominations in three out of the four categories, but Frankfort is represented in two of the four categories as two of the finalists!!! And the push is ON for the public’s vote to bring some recognition, glory and even an “award”* to Frankfort!
Here are the two categories that pertain to Frankfort:
Dream of the Year
Remember Ruth’s dream to wear a wedding dress? To read the entire story and see photos from the event on Capital Living, click HERE. Here is what is on the national Second Wind Dreams website:
Ruth Sullivan, a 92-year old resident of Ashwood Place dreamed of trying on wedding dresses. Ruth and her husband were married right after WWII when they both were discharged from the Navy. At that time, Ruth said that no one had big weddings because of the economy. So, she bought a new dress, visited the Justice of the Peace with her husband Friday and returned to work the following Monday.
David’s Bridal, Equestrian Limo, Teri’s Catering, Red Head Custom Cakes, Sammy Coulter, City of Frankfort-trolley, Home Instead Senior Care, Froggy and STAR media were involved in making this dream come true.
This dream showed Ruth that her age should not limit her or make her feel as though she missed out on something. It’s never too late. It also showed others that you are never too old to dream.
The Today Show, WKYT, Lexington Herald Leader, The State Journal, Cable 10, Bridal Magazine, Capital Living Magazine, Froggy 104,9, STAR 103.7 covered this dream. On The Today Show’s Facebook page, Ruth had over 40,000 likes and thousands of comments. Most were from other women of all ages who have had a similar experience and the same regret.
* Vote for this dream for an opportunity to bring home $500 to help other eldercare realize their dreams!!!
Member of the Year
Ashwood Place Retirement Residences made the final two nationally. The Second Wind Dreams at Ashwood Place has helped realize over 26 dreams and counting since it’s joining the national non-profit organization back in 2009! Currently, one of the biggest and boldest dreams are being realized by Betty Flora, who had always wanted to visit Alaska. Thanks to Ashwood Place and the generosity of the Frankfort community, Betty and her son are enjoying all the beauty that Alaska has to offer via a 7-day cruise!!! Second Wind Dreams at Ashwood Place hopes to eventually expand into the Frankfort community to make other dreams a reality. Ashwood TRULY deserves to be recognized as the national Member of the Year!
Here is what is on the national Second Wind Dreams website about Ashwood Place:
This member has fulfilled 26 dreams.
Dreams are posted in the newsletters and activity board. The member also does a reveal in advance to build excitement. Ashwood Place has an entire wall with every fulfilled dream.
The member releases a press release for each dream and is almost always covered by a media outlet. Coverage includes WKYT, WLEX, Cable 10, The State Journal, The Lexington Herald Leader, Capital Living Magazine, Froggy 104.9 or STAR 103.7. We have also been covered on The TODAY show and in a Bridal Magazine.
This member spreads the message to Capital Business Referral Group, The Kiwanis, The Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
Both the community and the residents are included in the dream fulfillment.
As mentioned before, Frankfort was very well represented on a national level by having representation in three of the four categories, with two individuals making it into the top 5 for Volunteer of the Year. Even though their names are not located in the final two in their respective category, it’s worth recognizing these individuals’ ongoing efforts to help make dreams come true for the local eldercare community. Both April Cole and Sammy Coulter were not only nominated, but made it into the Top 5 as the Extraordinary Nominations in the Volunteer of the Year category!
