It’s Boone Day!

And we’re celebrating, with

Wes Cowan, Ben Sollee and Bob Edwards

Boone Day at the KHS 2

Don’t miss this year’s Boone Day celebration to honor Kentucky’s 223rd birthday at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. This year’s all-star lineup begins the evening of Friday, June 5, with Narrative Stage featuring storyteller/composer/cellist Ben Sollee in concert and interviewed by Lexington Herald-Leader columnist Tom Eblen.

On Saturday, June 6, enjoy a delicious lunch and then hear Wes Cowan, star of PBS’s History Detectives and Antiques Roadshow, and popular radio personality Bob Edwards, formerly of NPR and now host of The Bob Edwards Show on SiriusXM, discuss “The Power of History in Our Daily Lives.” Guest moderator is Alan Lytle, news director at WUKY public radio.

We’re celebrating the Commonwealth’s 222nd birthday in style this year with a series of special activities featuring: 

President Lincoln’s Own Band: Straight from the blockbuster movie Lincoln, this nationally known group of musicians led by Kentucky’s own Don Johnson will jam 19th century-style in what’s certain to be a memorable performance.
“Explore Kentucky’s Future and the Power of History” Luncheon and Discussion: Dine on Kentucky fare and then delve into how powerful the past can be in shaping tomorrow when award-winning novelist, poet and farmer Wendell Berry and State Historian Dr. James Klotter share their vision of the Commonwealth’s future. KET veteran commentator Renee Shaw moderates.

Capital City Historical Dancers and Musicians: Who needs Dancing with the Stars? This intergenerational community group will show you how your ancestors kicked up their heels as they dance to tunes from the Civil War era.

Commemorative Bricks Dedication and Reception: Hear inspiring stories and tributes from Kentuckians representing all walks of life during the installation of commemorative bricks on the Pathway Through History in beautiful Cralle-Day Garden.
And while you’re with us don’t miss: 
A Kentucky Journey. Travel through the past in this permanent exhibit filled with thousands of Kentucky artifacts, sights and sounds in lifesize environments and interactive displays.
Kentucky Hall of Governors. Meet the people who have led our state through the years in this gallery filled with interactive displays, artifacts and more.
The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library, 1792 Stewart Home School Store, Old State Capitol and Kentucky Military History Museum will also be open for business and tours, as usual.
Boone Day Hours:
10 a.m.: Doors open. Capital City Dancers perform in Commonwealth
Hall (ongoing throughout the morning)
10:30 a.m.: Commemorative bricks dedication and reception on the Pathway Through History, Cralle-Day Garden
11 a.m.: President Lincoln’s Own Band concert, Keeneland Exhibition Gallery
12 p.m.: Lunch and panel discussion, Brown-Forman Kentucky Room
Cost:
$30 members; $40 non-members: Gives you access to all KHS Boone Day activities, including lunch and panel discussion. NOTE: YOU MUST REGISTER BY MAY 30 FOR THE LUNCH AND PANEL DISCUSSION. SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS.
$10: Gives you access to all KHS Boone Day activities, except lunch and panel discussion. NO ADVANCE REGISTRATION NEEDED.
After 12 p.m. Noon, price returns to regular admission cost (lunch and panel not

9:00 am-3:30 pm – Liberty Hall Historic Site, Early Kentucky Home Life Seminar: Foodways of Early Kentucky,  202 Wilkinson St. The day includes presentations, tour of Liberty Hall, and lunch featuring wines from First Vineyard. Admission to seminar is $45 per person ($40 for members of LHHS); register by completing a registration form (request by phone at (502)227-2560 or by email at educator@libertyhall.org).  Space is limited to the first 50 registrations.

11:30 am-12:30 pm – Lunchtime Concert Series, at the Ward Oates Amphitheater (at the end of West Main Street next to Liberty Hall and behind the Kentucky Bar Association) Bring your lunch and enjoy free music by Chris Fallis, Info: 696-0607.

5:00 – 6:00 pm – Grand Theatre, Lexington Children’s Theater Workshop presents “Stinky Cheese”, FREE!!!  After only a week of learning a new play, the children enrolled in the Lexington Children’s Theater Workshop invite you to their production of “Stinky Cheese” (short for “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales“).  A play based off the book, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales which is a postmodern children’s book by Jon Scieszka. Published in 1992 by Viking, it is a collection of twisted, humorous parodies of famous children’s stories and fairy tales, such as “Little Red Riding Hood”, “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Gingerbread Man”. Illustrated in a unique style by Lane Smith, the book won the New York Times Best Illustrated Book award, was a Caldecott Honor book, and has won numerous other awards in various countries.  COME ON OUT AND TAKE IN A FREE PERFORMANCE!

Have questions about the proof standard or how to get the kids involved? Bring along your genealogy issues, hot topics or questions and the group will try to help you out.  Even if we can’t solve your problem, we promise to provide lots of tea and sympathy! All research levels welcome – let’s learn from each other’s experiences!  Each Genealogy Tea and Sympathy session is free and tea is provided at the event.
