Franklin County Relay for Life Remix Wrap Up

After big bad Mother Nature huffed and puffed and blew all but one of the seventy plus tents away at the June 20th Franklin County Relay for Life event, the organizers decided to try again this past Friday in a more subdued gathering.  Dubbed the Franklin County Relay for Life 2014 Remix, the event was mostly held indoors at the Franklin County High School gym.  The event opened up with the inaugural 3K Color Run/Walk, where just over 40 runners and walkers participated.  The activity consisted of individuals, teams and families.  They were subjected to color stations where they were splattered with blue, pink and purple.  The runners and walkers seemed to enjoy the new activity.  Back inside the high school gym, where bleachers surrounded the track instead of team tents, cancer survivors, caregivers and teams walked the ceremonial lap around the luminaries on the floor.  The ceremonial reading of the names, a silent auction, as well as releasing of balloons and lanterns, were highlights from the nights abbreviated events.  Although not very well attended as a typical Relay for Life event, it was more to symbolize the “finishing the fight” against cancer and show Mother Nature that Frankfort residents will always find a way!

Annual Franklin County Event Turns Into Relay “Run for Your Life”

Bad Weather, Franklin County, Franklin County High School, Relay for Life of Franklin County

Friday evening, Franklin County Relay for Life turned nasty minutes before the kickoff of the annual event as nasty weather rolled through the area. Heavy rains and dangerous winds tore through East Frankfort snapping trees, downing power lines, and tearing up just about everyone’s tents that were set up for the event at Franklin County High School.  Many swear it was a tornado.  Others claim it was straight line winds.  Labels just don’t matter though when it comes to the amount of chaos and damage that lay in it’s wake.  Franklin County EMS, volunteers, and the FPB worked to restore order and power to the area.

John Hibbard, chairman of Franklin County Relay for Life, says that the “Luminaria Ceremony will be rescheduled in a couple of weeks”.  A date is yet to be determined as everyone is still stunned and in shock.

Taken from the Franklin County Relay for Life Facebook Page:

Family, friends, Relay For Life volunteers, and supporters. We will be rescheduling our inaugural Color Out Cancer 3k Color Run as soon as the committee can regroup and find a date. Please join us when we do to celebrate our survivors and remember our loved ones lost to cancer. There will be a special Luminaria ceremony after the run for all of the family and friends who would have been recognized last night. Last night’s storm was very exemplary of what we as cancer survivors go through emotionally with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Like survivors, we must push on and let cancer know we won’t stop until it is defeated. We WILL #finishthefight

“This surprise storm was just like cancer – came without much warning, did damage, broke hearts, and brought out raw emotions and tears.  Sometimes it takes storms like this to reinvigorate the fight in us all. After such storms, somewhere there is a rainbow waiting~~~”, says Angela Wilkins.

We look forward to seeing even stronger numbers of participants when a new date is set.  Frankfort is a strong community and is full of love and support for one another.  We shall show resolve in overcoming this as well!
