FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (June 11, 2013)– On your mark, get set, GO! It’s time for Frankfort’s summer holiday classic, Buffalo Trace Distillery’s twelfth annual 5K Race, the Great Buffalo Chase! Held the morning of Independence Day, July 4th, the race will wind through the scenic grounds of the historic Distillery. As in years past, proceeds from the race will help fund VFW Post 4075’s Annual Fourth of July fireworks show to be held that evening.
A few changes have been made this year to help the race run even smoother. Pre-registered runners, as well as those who want to register, can pick up their race packets on Wednesday, July 3rd from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Buffalo Trace Distillery Visitor Center, in addition to doing so the morning of the race. Also, chip timing (electronic measurement of a runner’s time and speed) is being introduced this year, which will help to greatly speed up the race results.
The cash prizes have also been increased again this year for the top three overall male and female runners to the following amounts: $2000 for third place, $2500 for second place, and $3000 for first place for both genders. Also new this year is the addition of a new monetary incentive of $1000 for beating the Great Buffalo Chase record finish time of 14:12 for male runners and 16:34 for female runners.
This is the fourth year in a row the prize money for the top runners has been increased, and the increase has consistently drawn world-class runners from around the region. Awards will also be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age group.
The race begins at 8 a.m. The certified race route remains the same as the past few years, starting on Distillery grounds and winding through historic aging warehouses, production facilities and lots of beautiful scenery before finishing up at the Visitor’s Center. Commemorative T-shirts will be given to all runners. Registration begins at 7 a.m. in front of the Buffalo Trace Distillery Visitor’s Center the day of the race, or as noted previously, runners can also register in person on July 3rd from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parking will be available at the Distillery; participants are asked to use the entrance off Fair Oaks as the Main Entrance will be closed.
