Have you ever dreamed of being healthier and happier through physical activity? Well, one group in Frankfort is gaining momentum in membership and is offering to help you achieve your goals to a healthier lifestyle – one step at a time.
The Frankfort Striders is a club located in the commonwealth’s capital city dedicated to promoting physical fitness, especially among runners and walkers, by fostering a fun atmosphere to gather. They gather once a month for a meeting, run or walk several times a week, and share information on upcoming events and encourage each other daily through social media, such as Facebook. Their goal is simple. Their attitude infectious. And they are offering to help you become better to yourself by offering free classes.
Some of the folks behind the Frankfort Trifecta Series are part of this group. They are instrumental in motivating others into living a more active lifestyle. The fine folks at Pro.Active Therapy, many of them members of the Frankfort Striders, are the key sponsors for the second leg of the series of races. And they are putting together two seminars this month. One geared towards beginners. The other is geared towards more advanced runners in the area.
Want to do a 5K but not sure where to begin? Then head on down and see the folks at the Pro.Active Therapy Clinic, located at 1004 Leawood Drive, on Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. You can learn from a free 3-hour event that is an educational discussion on all you need to know to participate successfully in your first 5K. It is also appropriate for individuals who are already active and hope to step it up a notch or two, or for runners who have had a break from running but are ready to get back on the road. They will discuss different training programs, staying motivated and injury prevention/flexibility/strengthening. Training Booklets for the Pro.Active for Life 5K/Frankfort Trifecta will also be available and all participants will receive a free physical therapy screening coupon to be used at Pro.Active Therapy. A second seminar will be held on Saturday, March 28 (same time/location) where they will cover more information. This seminar is open to the public.
The first leg of the Frankfort Trifecta Series is right around the corner with the “Run for the Gold” 3K Race being held on this coming Tuesday, March 17th. So this free seminar is times perfectly!
Debbie Brown, the Pro.Active 5K Race Director (the second race of the Trifecta Series), is instrumental in supporting a more active Frankfort. By sharing a “Runner Profile” with others on a regular basis, she hopes to show others that they can achieve their own personal goals.
Name & Age: Tricia
Occupation: Director of Media, Stewart Home & School
Family: Husband, Quentin, the love of my life
Started Run/Walking Because… I turned 30 and felt older. I wanted to beat my age and ignore the fact that I was getting older. I wanted to challenge myself to do something I had tried many times before and failed.
How Long I have been Run/Walking: one year
Average Time/mile: 9.5 min mile average
Longest Run/Walk accomplished to Date: 13.1 miles
Cross Training I do: I do circuit weight lifting and yoga
What Keeps Me Motivated… I love feeling the sense of accomplishment when I complete a run, especially when I don’t really want to. I feel like if I can get up, run, and finish strong, I can do anything in my day, no problem.
What I like best/enjoy the most about Run/Walking: I enjoy the camaraderie I have with my fellow runners. I run with the Cool Comfort Running Group* where I have met many new life-long friends and where I continue to make new ones every time someone joins the group. They are a support system with running and outside of running. It is a great time to let loose and have a good time while working hard. I also enjoy running alone when I need time to think. It is a time to be with God and with myself.
My greatest struggle regarding exercise: My greatest struggle is keeping the motivation. Life gets in the way and I am really great at making excuses. My comrades really make it easier for me to plan because I look forward to our time together. It doesn’t feel so much like working out.
Favorite Running/Walking Spot: Downtown Frankfort
Alone or with others (running preference): both
Favorite pre-race food: oatmeal and chia seeds
Favorite recovery food: oatmeal and chia seeds
Best Advice given to me and/or best advice for beginners…. Take your time working up to a race. Injuries are not biased… they happen to anyone.
One Thing I did wrong while training and/or during a race….. I pushed too hard, too fast. I have suffered from injuries the entire time. Ease into it and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Best/Proudest Running/Fitness Experience: Winning my age group on the Mustache Run at Spindletop. That will NEVER happen again.
Most Embarrassing/funny/memorable exercise/race/running moment: Funniest/funnest was running with Greg Lowe, Linda Word, Betsy Grewe, Ruth Carleton, and Nathan at the Hot Chocolate Race. It was a lot of fun because of the support of the Cool Comfort Group. They pushed me to better my time (by more than a minute a mile) and they stayed back to finish WITH me, despite slowing their personal times. That meant the world to finish the race hand-in-hand (literally) with some of my best friends. Not to mention the fun car conversations and laughs. This groups means everything to me.
The Pro.Active is just an extension of that group. The race, the people involved, are so thoughtful and giving and it really helps in supporting the new runners who don’t really think they have it in them. But guess what? YOU DO! And ProActive will help you get there. Their knowledge and expertise is one more ticket in your hat that you can count on for good information and a new friend or two.
My Running “mantra” is: I can do this. I can do anything.
Why I think you should sign up for the Pro.Active for Life 5K: It’s the best community and the best race around. Trust me. I’ve been to quite a few.
Anything else you’d like to share: HAVE FUN!
