Popular fundraising event highlights historic Kentucky homes.

Lexington, Ky.,  SEPTEMBER 23, 2015 – The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency (NHOA) of the Bluegrass seeks a distinguished home to feature for the 2016 Decorator’s Showcase.

Decorator’s Showcase is an opportunity to proudly present a historic Kentucky home for public viewing and spotlight the diverse talent of Kentucky’s top interior and landscape designers. Since 1976, Showcase organizers have chosen designers to redecorate rooms and highlight the beauty of a selected home. The designers of Lexington’s retail store “house” will coordinate designers for the next Showcase.

“Decorator’s Showcase has helped preserve and revitalize some of Central Kentucky’s most notable homes,” said Sherry Huff Culp, Kentucky’s State Long-Term Care Ombudsman and President of NHOA. “At the same time, it helps fund vital long-term care ombudsman services for vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities.”

There are almost 5,250 long-term care beds in 85 nursing homes, personal care homes, and family care homes throughout the 17-county Bluegrass district.”Residents of long-term care facilities are on average about 80 years old and have at least two disabilities. The majority have no visitors and no one looking out for them. Ombudsmen are advocates who go to residents’ bedsides and work to resolve problems,” said Denise Kennedy, Bluegrass District Ombudsman. “As a nonprofit agency, we depend on events like the Decorator’s Showcase in order to continue offering the high level of service we’ve provided for more than three decades.”

The 2016 Showcase will be the 24th house in a venerable tradition that includes historic properties such as The Mansion at Griffin Gate (1978), Bell House (1982), Waveland (1985), Spendthrift Farm (2000) and Highland Hall (2012). Interested parties should contact Laurie Clewett by October 2 in order to be considered as a Spring 2016 Showcase location. All proceeds from the event go toward NHOA’s Bluegrass Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.

About the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass, Inc.

The Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass, Inc. (NHOA) is an independent, nonprofit agency founded in 1981. Its mission is to improve the quality of care for residents of long-term care facilities.

Early Kentucky Home Life Seminar, Early Kentucky Home Life Seminar: The Book and 19th Century Parlor Culture, History, Liberty Hall, Liberty Hall Historic Site

Liberty Hall - Early KY Homes - 9-25-15

Liberty Hall Historic Site is offering its annual Early Kentucky Home Life Seminar on Friday, September 25, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Join rare books scholar Charles Bartman and historic interiors expert Patrick Lucas as we explore books and libraries in early Kentucky. Bartman will speak on early private libraries in Kentucky and Lucas will explore the role of books in 18th and 19th-century parlor culture.

To people of the 18th and 19th centuries, parlors and drawing rooms served as the social centers of their lives.  The décor of these rooms reflected their wealth and status, as well as an insatiable curiosity about the world, often expressed in the inclusion of books and other worldly goods. Confidently optimistic men and women occupied these rooms for entertainment, trying desperately to emulate the manners and customs of their British and French cousins through conversation, social calls, tea parties, musicales, and other entertainments. Their books provided one means of undertaking this cultural work.

The day culminates with tours of the Senator John Brown Library & Archives and our temporary exhibit, Reading the Browns, as well as the performance of a short play inspired by the words and books of John and Margaretta Brown. The $45 registration fee ($40 for members) includes morning refreshments and lunch. Pre-registration is required by calling(502) 227-2560. For more information, visit www.libertyhall.org.
