February, Franklin County Community Council, Kentucky State University, KSU, Meeting

Capital Living Logo Modified 022415

Once a month, non-profits and other organizations that serve the communities within Franklin County meet at the Paul Sawyier Public Library.  This group is known at the Franklin County Community Council.  Their most recent meeting was held on Monday.  Some organizations represented at these meetings include, but are not limited to, the Franklin County Health Department, the Salvation Army, the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce, the Paul Sawyier Public Library, the Simon House, the Franklin County Women’s Shelter, the Frankfort Kiwanis Club, representatives from county and city schools, the Red Cross, Franklin County C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and many, many more!  These groups are vital to every community within Franklin County and even beyond its borders.  Each month, a guest speaker makes a presentation to the group that can further benefit the area.

February’s guest speakers were members of Kentucky State University’s Community Engagement Panel, Shannon Brogan and Timothy Erick Latham.  KSU is reaching out into the Frankfort and Franklin County to strengthen ties and truly make steps to become “Frankfort’s College”.  Like any other college town or city, KSU looks to send their students out into the surrounding communities to volunteer and help serve others.

Associate professor of Speech Communication, Shannon Brogan talked about the success of the “Pay It Forward Frankfort” campaign, which started as a class project in April of 2014 in her Persuasive Speaking Class.  The class watched the movie “Pay It Forward” in order to “look for persuasive techniques in the movie”.  In doing so, they started a movement that swept through Frankfort this past Fall!  Read all about that story HERE on Capital Living.

Erick Latham, Program Director of KSU’s Youth Development Empowerment Program, spoke of the 125 minority students throughout Frankfort and Franklin County that take advantage of their afterschool and mentoring program.  The KSU students work one on one, as well as in groups, with the area kids on their homework other academic activities.  Latham also spoke of their summer enrichment programs.  For more information about the KSU Promising Youth Center for Excellence program, log onto http://kysu.edu/academics/college-of-professional-studies/promising-youth-center-for-excellence/ or contact Timothy.Latham@KYSU.edu.

The Franklin County Community Council meets on the last Monday of each month at 12 noon at the Paul Sawyier Public Library.  If you or your organization are interested in attending a meeting, or would like more information about this organization, contact Paula Rutledge at Paula.Rutledge@redcross.org, or Carmen Inman at chamber@frankfortky.info.
